Ultra-Rare Champagne From the Cellar Master At Selosse

Michel Fallon’s Ozanne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is the very definition of cult collectable. As the cellar master at Selosse for thirty years, Fallon knows how to craft great Champagne of texture, complexity and class. All of that expertise goes into this, his own label worked from a tiny plot in Avise, and it’s so small in production that William Kelley said of a previous release, “finding any of the thousand or so bottles released every year is next to impossible”.

The wines of Selosse are among Champagne’s most sought-after, and with such a similar DNA, Fallon’s should appeal to Selosse collectors. Fallon was inspired to craft this by Selosse himself and makes the Champagne in the winery of Selosse. He makes just one cuvee, the Ozanne, and it’s just about as rare as Champagne gets.

While technically a non-vintage, the Ozanne comes from just a single year. This parcel is the 2017 vintage and was disgorged in 2022. It hasn’t been rated by the critics, but previous notes are superb, with William Kelley calling a 2017 disgorgement “Full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, it’s layered and textural, with a bright spine of acidity, a pearly enlivening mousse and a long, intensely sapid finish”.

The May 2017 disgorgement of Fallon’s NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Ozanne is showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, toasted nuts, candied peel and honeycomb. Full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, it’s layered and textural, with a bright spine of acidity, a pearly enlivening mousse and a long, intensely sapid finish. Its combination of power and tension makes this the finest wine I’ve tasted from Fallon to date.
