Portraits of 3 inspiring women winemakers

To mark International Women’s Day we invite you raise a glass in celebration of three exceptional women with whom we have the pleasure of working in Singapore!

Isabel Ferrando, Florence Heresztyn and Charlotte Krajewski work in three of France’s most prestigious wine regions. Their pursuit of perfection and the beautiful wines they craft are a source of inspiration each time a cork is drawn.

Whether from a background amongst the upper echelons of international finance, a 3rd generation vigneronne, or having made wine on four continents, these winemakers are united by an uncompromising commitment to quality.  We are proud to feature them on International Women’s Day but there is not a day of the year on which we would not be proud to share the pleasure, inspiration and stores to be found in these bottles.

Discover their portraits & wines below.

Isabel Ferrando from Famille Isabel Ferrando (Rhone Valley)

Having forged a career as a banker, Isabel left her job in 1997 with the goal of learning the art of winemaking.  Her ambition was to take over a vineyard in the Rhône Valley, near her childhood home, and produce her own wine.  The dream became a reality in 2003 when Isabel acquired the Domaine Saint-Préfert in the iconic village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Isabel is dedicated to producing high-quality wines using only organic and biodynamic methods.  Her wines are known for their opulent, fleshy, and complex flavours.  In 2020 Isabel was joined by her daughter (another woman, yes!!), following studies at the winemaking school in Beaune.  To mark this new chapter, Isabel has re-christened her wines and now labels them Famille Isabel Ferrando.

Florence from Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini (Burgundy)

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini has a rich history dating back to the 1930s when Jean Heresztyn, the grandfather of Florence, left his native Poland in search of work.  He found employment in the vineyards in Burgundy and eventually settled in Gevrey-Chambertin.

Today, Florence Heresztyn continues her family’s winemaking legacy with Simon her husband (from Champagne).  The couple, who are forward-thinking and technically skilled, farm just 5.5 hectares of vineyards in the Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Chambolle-Musigny regions.  Almost all of the domaine’s vines are now managed using biodynamic principles.  The resulting wines are fragrant, soulful and delicate.

Charlotte from Chateau Séraphine (Pomerol)

Charlotte Krajewski did her first harvests at Chateau de Sours in Bordeaux and Groot Constantia in South Africa.  She then travelled and worked extensively in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and France before settling in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand for 6 years where she worked at Trinity Hill and Elephant Hill.  In 2017, Charlotte returned to the family properties to work at Chateau Seraphine in Pomerol and Clos Cantenac in St Emilion.  Currently, she serves as the Technical Director and Chief Winemaker at both properties.

Her philosophy: high-quality farming – the low yielding vineyards are worked exclusively by horse – and lo-fi winemaking, to produce a Pomerol of real character and distinction.

Famille Isabel Ferrando

2020 Famille Isabel Ferrando, Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc
100 bottles @ SGD $80 per bottle (inc GST $86,40)
“This cool customer is a very unusual white Chateauneuf, with plenty of herbal freshness and attractive white-peach character on the ripe, rich palate. I love the lemony acidity and hint of citrus-pith bitterness that together make the finish so refreshing. A blend of 80% clairette with 20% roussanne that was matured in glass globes. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”
93 Points James Suckling

2020 Famille Isabel Ferrando, Chateauneuf du Pape
150 bottles @ SGD $160 per bottle (inc GST $172.80)
“Now the flagship of this estate, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 75% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre, and a little Syrah. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it offers a beautiful array of black raspberry and darker cherry fruit as well as lots of graphite, chalky minerality, Provençal garrigue, and spice. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied effort has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, rock-solid underlying structure and concentration, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It needs to be forgotten for 2-4 years (although it certainly offers incredible pleasure even today) and will keep for two decades. Tasted twice.”

2020 Famille Isabel Ferrando, Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis
60 bottles @ SGD $180 per bottle (inc GST $194.40)
“The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis is the usual 100% Grenache that was brought up all in demi-muids. More dried strawberries, blackberries, loamy earth, spice, and hints of saddle leather emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, has ripe tannins, and is just a heavenly Grenache in the making. I don’t see it hitting the same heights as the 2007, but it’s certainly up with the top players of the vintage.”
94/97 Points Jeb Dunnuck

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini

2020 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Bourgogne Rouge
90 bottles @ SGD $50 per bottle (inc GST $54)
“A ripe but quite fresh nose combines notes of essence of red and dark pinot fruit with those of earth and soft spice wisps. The delicious and nicely voluminous middle weight flavors conclude in a reasonably persistent if mildly rustic finish. To enjoy young.”
86/88 Points Allen Meadows

2020 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Village
70 bottles @ $105 per bottle (inc GST $113.40)
“A mildly toasty nose reflected very pretty, and markedly floral, nose of spice, plum and warm earth. The delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors possess an almost delicate mouthfeel before terminating in a caressing, focused and lingering finale. This should drink well young.”
87/89 Points Allen Meadows

2020 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Morey Saint Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru
40 bottles @ SGD $140 per bottle (inc GST $151.20)
“An even more floral-suffused nose displays aromas of plum, earth and a top note of kirsch. The delicious, intense, robust and muscular medium weight plus flavors possess fine density while the bold, moderately rustic and powerful finish makes clear it’s constructed to reward mid to longer-term cellaring. A quality effort.”
91/94 Points Allen Meadows – ‘Outstanding’

Château Séraphine

2019 L’innocence de Séraphine
100 bottles @ SGD $65 per bottle (inc GST $70.20)
“Deep red-black right to the rim, with savoury marmite aromas complemented by a lovely nose of violet-infused fruit, rich and intense. It also displays fresh, toasty and really interesting notes that lead to a palate of ripe, spiced, black fruits, making it supple and medium-bodied. It is an elegant wine that also shows lovely cinnamon notes and is fresh and leafy too with a refreshing bitter cranberry twist and bite, but all nicely done, with a long, rich sweet finish.”
Martin Krajewski, Proprietor

2019 Château Séraphine
14 bottles @ SGD $180 per bottle (inc GST $194.40)
“The 2019 Séraphine, the recent addition to the Pomerol landscape courtesy of proprietor Martin Krajewski, was very impressive when I tasted the barrel sample. Now in bottle, it delivers on that promise. It has a gorgeous, pure, lilting bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and light black truffle scents that unfold in the glass. I really appreciate the definition and detail, and the prudent use of new oak (40%). The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a keen thread of acidity, a touch more backbone than a few months ago, and insistent grip on the finish. Traces of black pepper furnish the aftertaste. As I said before, one to watch. Just 2,800 bottles produced.”
94 Points Neal Martin
