Domaine Faiveley

2009 Domaine Faiveley, Musigny Grand Cru
96 points Allen Meadows ‘Don’t Miss’
A positively kaleidoscopic nose displays a magnificent breadth of red and black pinot fruit aromas, intensely floral and exotic spice nuances that continue onto the rich, full and quite stylish medium full-bodied flavors blessed with impressive reserves of supporting mid-palate sap that relegate the very firm tannic spine to the background before exploding into a youthfully austere yet velvety and palate staining finish that seems to go on and on. This is a very classy effort. Drink 2027+
2012 Domaine Faiveley, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
92-95 points Allen Meadows ‘Don’t Miss’
Here the nose is quite similar to that of the Latricières save for the fact that the sauvage character is even more pronounced. As is typically the case there is also more size, weight, richness and power if a bit less refinement and minerality to the large-scaled flavors that also brim with dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the hugely long finish. If you prefer a bit more elegance, buy the Latricières, and if you prefer robust power, buy the Mazis, though there’s no harm in liking both! Drink 2030+
2013 Domaine Faiveley, Musigny Grand Cru
95-98 points Allen Meadows
A very pungent nose displays plenty of wood and menthol influences on the quite firmly reduced aromas. There is superb richness and intensity to the seductively textured mineral-inflected flavors that are at once powerful yet refined before culminating a very backward, concentrated and stunningly long finish that just goes on and on. This is exceptionally promising and should also live for decades. In a word, brilliant. Drink 2031+
2014 Domaine Faiveley, Musigny Grand Cru
95-97 points Allen Meadows ‘Don’t Miss’
Reduction renders the nose impossible to properly assess. Otherwise there is outstanding intensity and vibrancy to the silky and highly refined medium-bodied flavors that also possess an opulent mouth feel to the mid-palate before concluding in a beautifully mineral-driven and impeccably well-balanced finale that also just seems to go on and on. This seductively textured effort is exceptionally powerful and quite ripe but I cannot underscore sufficiently just how structured this wine is and even if you’re lucky enough to obtain a bottle or two, you might as well consign yourself to forgetting them in the back of the cellar. 2015 Domaine Faiveley, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru
94 points Allen Meadows (from magnum)
An all but invisible application of wood can still be found on the evolving, if still mostly primary, aromas of spicy, ripe and pretty red and dark cherry, earth and discreet sauvage notes. There is fine punch to the sleek, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the tautly muscular flavors that terminate in an impressively long and still somewhat austere finish. At 11 years of age, this remains youthful and relatively compact and while it could be enjoyed now in a pinch, in magnum format this should continue to age effortlessly. Drink 2035+
2015 Domaine Faiveley, Corton Clos des Cortons Grand Cru
96 points Allen Meadows
An extremely ripe nose manages to avoid any sense of surmaturité on the liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and lilac scents. This is a massive wine, with huge mid-palate concentration, power and muscle that terminates in a borderline painfully intense finale that both coats the palate and lasts for minutes. I take considerable pains to point out however that this ultra-structured and overtly austere effort is not only built for the long haul but for the very long haul. I have suggested an initial drinking window of 30 years from now but it may very well be longer. In sum, this brilliant effort is very old school Corton that I wouldn’t even consider opening for at least 10 years. Drink 2035+
2016 Domaine Faiveley, Chambertin Clos de Beze Les Ouvrees Rodin Grand Cru
94-97 points Allen Meadows ‘Dont’ Miss’
This is aromatically similar to the regular cuvée save for being even spicier and displaying a bit more wood influence. There is almost painful intensity to the super-sleek big-bodied flavors that possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel due to a mid-palate that brims with sappy dry extract that coats the mouth on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced finale. While this may change given that these are barrel samples but based on the two that I tasted, this is actually slightly less structured though I emphasize slightly. Either way, this is a seriously impressive effort that should age effortlessly. Drink 2034+
2016 Domaine Faiveley, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru
93-96 points Allen Meadows ‘Don’t Miss’
This is even more floral-inflected with an abundance of spice elements adding breadth to the airy and cool aromas of primarily red berries. Once again the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is quite sleek if not necessarily more complex on the sappy, focused and strikingly persistent finish. This is actually quite similar in quality and expression though with just a bit more mid-palate concentration. Drink 2036+

2019 Domaine Faiveley, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru
93-96 points Allen Meadows ‘Don’t Miss’
A mildly toasty and mentholated nose offers up a wonderful array of spice elements on the notably floral red berry fruit and earth-inflected aromas. The sleek and satin-textured big-bodied flavors possess a highly sophisticated mouthfeel that exudes evident minerality on the youthfully austere and terrifically persistent finish. A brief summation would be cool and very classy.
