Magnificent Value: 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux VV "pure and unadorned in style" (WK)

We are thrilled to introduce you to the 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Louis-Michel & Fils.

This historical domaine, which dates back to 1804, is a family-owned estate that is renowned for its expertise in crafting exceptional Chablis wines. The heir, Guillaume Michel, is known for producing intense and elegant wines that are pure and consistently excellent.

The cuvee we have on offer today is made from grapes grown on old vines in the 1st Growth Butteaux vineyard. Due to the higher proportion of white clay in the soil, this Premier Cru is known for producing wines with more structure and complexity. Indeed, the Chardonnay-based wines from Butteaux are powerful and steely, with subtle stonefruit and apple flavors.

William Kelley, praised this 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes and stated that “Intense and tensile wines are the calling card here, pure and unadorned in style and consistently high in quality. […] The 2020 vintage is a real success here and likely the domaine’s best since 2017.”

At under $65/ bottle to your table, we feel this offers exceptional value for a 93+ point Butteaux from the excellent 2020 vintage! Don’t miss out on this chance to experience the excellence of Domaine Louis-Michel & Fils Butteaux VV. Please let us know if you would like some of these.

With best wishes,
The Vinum Team

The 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes will be bottled later than usual, as Michel was still waiting on the delivery of glass bottles when I visited—but extra time on the fine lees certainly won’t do it any harm. Exhibiting aromas of pear, white flowers, freshly baked bread, confit citrus and iodine, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with terrific depth and tension. It’s a close race between this and Michel’s Vaulorent this year. Guillaume Michel presides over this important 22-hectare estate, which has long been the reference for tank-fermented and matured Chablis, a style that the Michel family did much to popularize in the 1980s. Intense and tensile wines are the calling card here, pure and unadorned in style and consistently high in quality. Indeed, I sometimes think that Louis Michel is the most underrated of Chablis’s larger domaines. The 2020 vintage is a real success here and likely the domaine’s best since 2017. Some cuvées will see a slightly longer than usual élevage due to glass shortages, but I suspect that will only enhance their quality.
93+ Points William Kelly
