The Grand Cru wearing a Village label

Grand Village is one of the best values in Bordeaux, and this year, it exceeds expectations
92-94pts – The Wine Advocate
I like to think of Grand Village as the ‘test kitchen’ of Chateau Lafleur.  New ideas, innovations and techniques are refined in this cru before being rolled out in the iconic Pomerol.  As such, Chateau Grand Village benefits from a logic-defying amount of care and attention to detail.  As such, this is probably every Bordeaux insider’s hottest tip at this price point.

In fact, Chateau Grand Village is probably about the only wine at this modest price that it makes sense to buy en primeur – it punches so far above its weight in quality and is simply unavailable at opening prices further down the line.  This is haute couture tailoring offered at an extremely accessible tariff.

Why buy the 2023?

Of course I will tell you that every vintage is different and every vintage deserves attention.  I have probably already told you, rather too many times, that 2023 has something special to offer Bordeaux lovers.  For me, the quality of the Merlot in 2023 Grand Village is unique and that is the reason to give this a close look.

This year, the aromatics of the wine – all florals and violets – seem to be amped up.  The texture is particularly velvety and rich, and yet the acidity of the year cuts through to bring balance.  Unusually, the 2023 Les Perrieres is 100% Bouchet – Lafleur’s genetically unique old vine strain of Cabernet Franc – and so Grand Village benefitted from the inclusion of superior Merlot that would normally be blended into its sibling Cru.
2023 Chateau Grand Village
SGD $165 (inc GST $179.85) per case (6*75cl OC)
Brilliantly floral – has a suggestion of inkiness that never develops but morphs into violets and blossom.  Bright, with an acidity that gives accent and definition.  Saline, taut and mineral.  Silky and intensely savoury through its core.  Gorgeous.  91% Merlot gives a beautiful, plummy quality with a richness to the texture.  Mineral on the finish.

Most of our allocation of the 2023 sold out en primeur, however we have a few cases still available should you want to take a final bite of the cherry!

In addition to Chateau Grand Village we can offer a handful of cases each of the other Guinaudeau wines listed below – please contact us if you are interested.

With all best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

Aromas of cassis, blueberries, dark wild berries and flowers introduce the 2023 Grand Village, a medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy wine with a deep core of fruit that’s framed by powdery tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. As readers may remember, Grand Village is one of the best values in Bordeaux, and this year, it exceeds expectations. It’s one of the sleepers of the vintage. This is a blend of 91% Merlot (picked between the 11th and 14th of September) and 9% Cabernet Franc (picked on the 20th of September).
92-94pts – Yohan Castaing / The Wine Advocate
The 2023 Grand Village is gorgeous. Merlot plays the leading role this year, but what really comes through is the wine’s saline minerality and nuance. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, blood orange, cinnamon and dried herbs are nicely pushed forward. The 2023 is an especially deep, serious Grand Village that benefits from the inclusion of Merlot that typically would have gone into Les Perrières.
90-92pts – Antonio Galloni / Vinous

Vivid fruit, juicy texture, this is a concentrated Grand Village with plenty of dense red and blue fruits, delivered with fresh acidities that reflect the clay limestone soils. Mouthwatering signoff. Higher levels of Merlot this year than usual because all of the Cabernet Franc is in Les Perrières.
