Chateau Lynch Bages

Chateau Lynch Bages: A Flying Fifth:

Chateau Lynch Bages is one of Bordeaux’s most popular wines for very good reason, it’s excellent in quality and great value for a wine of its pedigree. A so-called ‘Flying Fifth’ due to its ability to punch well above its Fifth Growth Classification, Lynch Bages is a statuesque, structured and consistently excellent Pauillac.

The Grand Vin is the star of the show, while the second wine, Echo de Lynch gives a good insight into the house style at a very reasonable price. A small amount of white is also made and has achieved something of a cult following.

Quintessential Pauillac:

Lynch Bages is classic Pauillac in style and substance, meaning that it is muscular, powerful, concentrated and immensely age-worthy. It sits on a terroir of deep gravel over limestone. This is perfect for the Cabernet Sauvignon that typically makes up around 70% of the blend. Merlot makes up around 20% with the remainder Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot.

On the nose, look for cassis, cigar box and dark fruits. The palate is defined by powerful tannins, plenty of lively acidity and dark berry and blackcurrant. With ten or even twenty years of bottle age, the tannins relax, resulting in a complex and incredibly satisfying claret.
