Chateau Margaux: The Musigny Of Bordeaux

While Lafite is characterised by elegance and sophistication, Latour by brooding power and Mouton by flamboyance and exuberance. The First Growth of Chateau Margaux is defined by its incredible perfumed aromatics and sense of weightless power. It is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove that, for some, bears comparison with the Grand Cru of Musigny.

The second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Ch Margaux, is a small production gem, and the rare white, Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux, is one of Bordeaux’s most exciting white wines.

Chateau Margaux: An Iron Fist in A Velvet Glove

The eponymous estate of its appellation, Chateau Margaux, sits on a tremendous terroir of deep gravel that is perfectly suited to the Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 75% of the vines. The rest is made up of 20% Merlot with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Pockets of clay and limestone covered by gravel create a unique profile, and the soaring aromatics and beguiling mid-weight texture that are Chateau Margaux’s calling cards. There’s an uncommon delicacy to match the immense quality in Chateau Margaux that sets it apart from its peers.

Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux: A Sensational White

The Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux is a fantastic white. White wines have long been grown at the estate. In recent years, the white has been taken ever more seriously, and quality has jumped. A wine of opulence and weight, this is a wine that rivals the great dry whites of Pessac. However, with production generally sub 1,000 cases, there isn’t very much to go around.

We were filming at Ch Margaux as the 1982 was being picked – the first ever thing we filmed for The Wine Programme, the world s first TV series about wine. I remember they ran out of tank space, so copious was the crop. Looked definitely more youthful than the Haut-Brion 1982 served immediately beforehand, with the acidity decidedly more marked. Ripe fruit plus acidity and a slightly dry finish. Not the finest 1982, not the finest Ch Margaux. Paul Pontallier arrived in time for the 1983 so would have overseen ageing and bottling of this wine. Hint of dunked biscuits. This would be impressive in isolation but not next to the other 1982 firsts. (JR) [10/02/2026]

The 1982 Chateau Margaux is adorned with a captivating, very floral crushed violet bouquet that blossoms in the glass. Perhaps it has a little more sophistication than the ’82 Mouton. This bottle leans a little more towards red than black fruit. Stunning delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with lace-like tannins, very poised and focused, fresh and saline. Silky towards the finish, which fans out in consummate fashion, this is a beautiful Margaux that is utterly seductive. Tasted single blind at the 1982 dinner at Cornus in London. The 1982 Chateau Margaux is a wine that I have tasted many times, constantly contrasted against the 1983 to see which is better. Frankly I found that it depends on the bottle, although maybe the 1983 edges it. But it is important to assess the 1982 on its own individual merits because it is a superb First Growth. This was a great bottle: fragrant and beautifully defined on the nose that on this occasion offered a more conspicuous graphite scent, which lent it a Pauillac-like personality. Allowing the wine to open and aerate, the traits one associates with the property emerge-wilted violets and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and mineral-laden, that suggestion of candied orange peel on the entry segueing into layers of pure red and black fruit. There is always something effortless about this Chateau Margaux and the pixelation on the finish is up there with the very best. Is it the best 1982 First Growth? No, it’s not quite up there with 1982 Latour or Mouton-Rothschild, however, it is a sublime evocation of the vineyard and it will continue to give pleasure for a couple of decades yet. Tasted May 2016. [Neal Martin, 28/09/2017]

Antonio Galloni 97

The 1982 Chateau Margaux is a real stunner. An exotic, almost candied bouquet melds into sweet red-hued fruit in a voluptuous, racy Margaux endowed with magnificent purity. Large and ample on the palate, with silky tannins and translucent fruit, the 1982 is rich yet also miraculously seamless. All the elements are in the right place. I followed this bottle over several hours, during which it only improved. The 1982 won t last forever, but it will deliver thrilling drinking for up to another decade. This is one of the better 1982 Margauxs I have tasted. [Antonio Galloni, 05/01/2015]

Vinous 96+

Deep ruby-red. Boysenberry, cassis, toasty oak and bitter chocolate on the slightly dusty nose. Penetrating and powerful; quite dry but almost exotically ripe, with sappy berry flavors complicated by graphite and licorice notes. Finishes very tannic and very long, with a strongly spicy character. 94(+?). Second bottle: Medium ruby. Vibrant aromas of boysenberry, violet and licorice. Pure silk in the mouth, with great sappy verve. Hugely concentrated and compellingly sweet. Utterly spherical wine, finishing with outstanding mounting fruit. Drink now to 2030.
