Leoville Las Cases: A 2nd Growth That Can Challenge First Growths

The St Julien 2nd Growth Estate of Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the Left Bank of Bordeaux’s elite wines. Located on the edge of the appellation with vineyards abutting those of the mighty Chateau Latour on one side, this is a statuesque and towering wine that is renowned for its capacity to age.

The Grand Vin represents around 45% of production, and with the 2nd wine Le Petit Lion, around 10%. Also look out for Clos du Marquis, which is not a second wine, but comes from its own specific parcel of vines.

The style and substance of Leoville Las Cases

Las Cases is located on the Leoville plateau and the deep gravel soils here are perfect for the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates the blend. In recent years, Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for around 80%, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot making up the balance.

The style is one of authority, structure and complexity. Las Cases is Bordeaux at its most aristocratic and confident. It is not a wine to drink young, but rewards, perhaps even demands cellaring to show at its complex best.

A First Growth Rival

Las Cases has a reputation for challenging the First Growths in sheer brilliance. For Robert Parker, “Leoville-Las Cases is unquestionably one of the great names and wines of Bordeaux… consistently of first-growth quality”. Jane Anson highlights how it “is often compared to its Pauillac neighbour Latour in profile”. Praise does not come much higher.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 94

Tasted at the Las-Cases off-line at The Square. Many years have passed since I last tasted the ’83 Las-Cases. It is reticent at first, like and old tongue-tied friend entering the room, then it blossoms with aeration offering scents of leather, chestnut, brambly black fruit and freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with melted red-berry fruits, firm tannins and superb balance. Hints of bell pepper and sandalwood furnish the long, harmonious finish. This is a wonderful wine for the vintage that is drinking perfectly now. [Neal Martin, 31/07/2011]

Still dark ruby but with a pale rim. Light nose that suggests dry fruit. Very firm finish. There is still a bit of tannin here! In fact I am going to decant it into my wider goblet-type decanter… Pretty austere at the moment – perhaps it will bloom but I don’t hold out enormous hope… (No alcohol given on the label then.)
