Chateau Pichon Lalande – A Superb Super Second

The Pauillac Second Growth of Chateau Pichon Lalande (or Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande to give it its full name) is one of Bordeaux’s most revered properties.

Pichon Lalande is a beautiful Chateau located in one of Pauillac’s best locations. The building itself is stunning, think of what you’d expect the perfect Bordeaux chateaux to look like, and it’s this. The place and the wines all scream quality.

Some incredible wines have been made here over the years. The 1982, for example, is one of the finest reds from Bordeaux’s most famous vintage. In recent years, Pichon Lalande has undergone something of a renaissance, and it is now consistently outstanding. It has become one of the key En Primeur purchases in any given campaign.

The Grand Vin makes up around 50% of production, with the remainder going into the excellent second wine, Pichon Comtesse Reserve.

Class, Grace, Poise & Sophistication

Chateau Pichon Lalande is superbly located overlooking the Gironde River. It is in a sweet spot of Pauillac. To give an idea of just how well situated it is, parts of the vineyard touch those of the mighty First Growth of Chateau Latour.

The vineyard covers 90 hectares and is planted with 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It sits on classic Pauillac gravels over iron-rich clay, which helps it cope well with the increasingly hot summers in Bordeaux.

In style, it is utterly captivating. The epitome of grace, sophistication, and poise. It is “just a stunning wine, easily one of my favourite estates in Bordeaux” for Jane Anson. For her, it has “a grace and vibrancy that delivers personality and signature year after year”.  This is not a burly and imposing Pauillac. Pichon Laladne is effortlessly chic, just oozing refinement, class and panache.

Served blind in a Zalto glass.Sweet, heady nose with lots of ripe-fruit pleasure on the mid palate but slightly drying out on the end. [18/08/2026]

The 1986 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a vintage I have tasted several times, including at the chateau, but this bottle is one of the best I have encountered. It has a vibrant nose of blackberry intermixed with cedar and a light ferrous note, perhaps even a suggestion of paprika as it moves into its secondary phase. Showing plenty of undergrowth, the bouquet coheres beautifully in the glass as subtle clove aromas manifest over time. The palate is fresh and lively with black fruit aplenty and quite strict tannins that lend it an off-dry feel. One of the most saline bottles I can remember, this example displays exquisite delineation and a slightly softer landing than the bottle I tasted several years ago. Outstanding. Tasted at the chateau. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2048

Now at 30 years of age, there is a gulf between the two Pichons in this vintage that no longer exists. The 1986 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has long been one of the best wines from the estate alongside the 1982 (even if the first bottle was a little oxidized). The second bottle was representative. It has a classic pencil-lead, cedar-infused nose that rockets from the glass, a subtle floral note developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, a pinch of white pepper and cedar, structured compared to coeval vintages and perhaps further along its drinking plateau than previous examples. Certainly a point, I would be reaching for bottles of this now if you cannot locate those 1982s, or alternatively seek out the superlative 1996. This still remains a fine, rather regal Pichon-Lalande. Tasted July 2016. [Neal Martin, 28/09/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030
