Chateau Ausone – A Titan Of St Emilion

St Emilion’s Chateau Ausone is one of Bordeaux’s elite producers. It occupies one of the region’s very best vineyards and is a wine of uncommon style, panache and quality.

]The modern estate dates back to the 17th century, and its name comes from the Roman poet and statesman Ausonius, who owned about 100 acres of vineyard in and around the area in the 4th century AD.

It was bought by Alain Vauthier in 1997, who oversaw a modernisation of the winery and wine-making techniques. His efforts have seen Ausone soar to the very front rank in terms of prestige Bordeaux.

Production of the Grand Vin is small at just 2,000 cases or so in a typical vintage. The excellent second wine, Chapelle d’Ausone is even smaller and always very rare on the market.

Ausone: Ethereal, Intoxicating and Complex

Situated very close to St Emilion itself, Chateau Ausone’s sits on an utterly magnificent terroir. Jeff Leve sums up the quality nicely when he writes ““When you ask almost any chateau owner or vigneron to name the best terroir in Bordeaux, the overwhelming majority say it belongs to Chateau Ausone”.

The soil is mainly limestone – which gives the trademark elegance – and is evenly split at around 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc. 50+ year old vines and very low yields provide the concentration to match.

The style here is intoxicating. Ausone is deliciously aromatic, ethereal and complex on the nose, unfurling in the glass beautifully over time. On the palate it is the epitome of weightless power, the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. There is always incredible intensity, the finest of acidity and perfectly judged tannins. Together the combine to make one of St Emilon’s and Bordeaux’s very finest wines.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 90

The 1990 Ausone is a vintage that I have tasted half a dozen times, waxing lyrical when I first tasted it way back in 2000, but then my sentiments cooling off with each encounter. It has an exotic bouquet that articulates the growing season more than the terroir – camphor and eucalyptus, quite heady and showy (some might say vulgar but that would be too pejorative.) There is a smear of chocolate on the entry, moderate acidity, fleshy and ripe but missing the complexity of its peers, espresso and dried blood tincturing the fruit on the finish. It is a pleasurable Saint-Emilion rather than a great Ausone. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London. [Neal Martin, 03/01/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2018-2032

Wine Advocate 90

Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London. Dark claret core with deep brick/tawny rim. The nose is odd: very polished with some noticeable volatility at first, lifted red fruits: kirsch, juniper berries, a touch of blood orange and a little ginger. Good definition, but it takes some getting used to. It develops a digestive biscuit aroma with time. The palate is medium-bodied, certainly less complex than more recent vintages but it is well balanced. There is a touch of piquancy here, tart red-berried fruits, relatively lightweight but very fresh towards the finish. There are superior examples of this wine out there. Drink now-2020. Tasted December 2009. [Neal Martin, 01/12/2009]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020

JancisRobinson.com 17

Mid-crimson with ruby rim. Toasty, appetising nose with some vigour. Very elegant wine with a certain noblesse and certainly some tannins for the future. But not all-enveloping class. Quite rigid tannins for the amount of fruit. [28/06/2002]

Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017

Vinous 92+

Red-ruby with a hint of amber at the edge. Red cherry, redcurrant, minerals, chocolate and a medicinal hint of cough syrup on the nose. Minerally, fresh and juicy, with penetrating acids framing the rich fruit. Finishes very long, with dusty tannins spreading over the entire palate. Turned slightly dry as it opened in the glass. Drink 2006 to 2030. [Stephen Tanzer, 07/01/2002]
