The Vision of Domaine d’Auvenay

“Known simply as ‘Lalou’, Mme Bize-Leroy remains one of the most towering figures in the world of wine…she has a remarkable cellar of older vintages that is without equal in Burgundy, or possibly anywhere, for that matter.” This is how Antonio Galloni (from Vinous) describes Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy, the owner of Domaine Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay. She is a visionary who believes in biodynamic viticulture and natural winemaking, producing wines that are pure, expressive, and complex.

The History of Domaine d’Auvenay

Domaine d’Auvenay was born in the late 1980s, when Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy bought a small farm in Saint-Romain, a village in the Côte de Beaune. She named it after the house of Auvenay, which was her family’s original domaine and the headquarters of Maison Leroy, a négociant business founded by her great-grandfather François Leroy in 1868. She gradually expanded the estate, acquiring vineyards in some of the most prestigious appellations in the Côte de Nuits, such as Bonnes-Mares, Musigny, and Mazis-Chambertin. Today, the domaine covers 3.87 hectares of vines, mostly Grand Cru and Premier Cru classified, and produces around 10,000 bottles per year.

The Wines of Domaine d’Auvenay

The wines of Domaine d’Auvenay are made with the same meticulous care and attention as those of Domaine Leroy, following the principles of biodynamic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, using whole clusters and varying degrees of new oak. The wines are aged for a long time, sometimes up to four years, before being bottled without fining or filtration. The result is wines that are elegant, aromatic, and complex, reflecting the terroir and the vintage. The wines of Domaine d’Auvenay are highly coveted by collectors and connoisseurs and often command astronomical prices at auctions.
