Chateau Latour: An Iconic Bordeaux First Growth

Towering, imposing and immense, Chateau Latour is a true connoisseur’s First Growth. From a prime plot in Pauillac, the Grand Vin from here is among Bordeaux’s and, indeed the world’s best and is rightly revered. The second wine, Les Forts de Latour, is also magical, a match for many classed growths in quality.

Chateau Latour: A Unique Terroir & Intoxicating Style

Chateau Latour is blessed with one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. Planted with a classic Left Bank blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it has a near-perfect aspect stretching down to the Gironde.

The soils here are characterised by having a much higher percentage of clay (the same type as found at Chateau Petrus in Pomerol) under the covering of gravel than Lafite, for example. This terroir translates to a rich, intense, powerful and intoxicating style.

This magnificent vineyard is allied to some of the most meticulous, precise and outright impressive winemaking on the planet, which means a wine against which all are measured.

The Withdrawal From En Primeur

The En Primeur season, which occurs in the spring and early summer after the previous harvest, when the Château of Bordeaux releases their wines as futures, is one of the key events of the season. Latour, however, no longer takes part. The 2012 vintage was the last vintage of Latour released as a future, and since then, all releases have been from physical stocks in Latour’s cellars.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

JancisRobinson.com 16.5

Very early budburst. Rather simple, fruity nose. Funnily enough, unusually, this seems less evolved than the 1996 on the nose – although it looks much more evolved. Impact of drought on Les Forts is always very visible because there is very little clay in the vineyards. The leaves turned yellow in Les Forts parcels in this, Engerer’s first vintage (which does not seem to have been especially successful for the Grand Vin either – see below). Something a little dusty and dry on the finish. Very stark contrast to the much more confident balance of the 1996. Drying finish. A bit awkward. Much fatter than the 1996. Big September showers after the drought. This wine needs food even more than most vintages of Les Forts. [07/07/2009]

Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022

Wine Advocate 89

Latour’s second wine, Forts de Latour, is now one of the two or three finest second wines of Bordeaux (Bahans-Haut-Brion and the Clos du Marquis of Leoville Las-Cases are two other personal favorites). The terrific, dark ruby/purple-colored 1995 possesses a sweet, jammy black fruit-scented nose intertwined with smoky minerals, earth, and spicy oak. The wine is surprisingly thick and rich in the mouth, with its glycerin and concentration of fruit largely concealing the moderate tannin. This excellent, sweet wine is less powerful, but more accessible than the 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2015. [Robert Parker, 01/02/1998]

Vinous 89+

Very unforthcoming on the nose; opened to show a whiff of shoe polish. Also quite closed in on itself in the mouth; hints of black cherry and dark chocolate. Rather powerfully structured and tough to taste today, but conveys an impression of of excellent concentration. As I noted last year, the substantial tannins coat the insides of the cheeks. May ultimately merit a 90+ rating. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/1998]
