Chateau Margaux: The Musigny Of Bordeaux

While Lafite is characterised by elegance and sophistication, Latour by brooding power and Mouton by flamboyance and exuberance. The First Growth of Chateau Margaux is defined by its incredible perfumed aromatics and sense of weightless power. It is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove that, for some, bears comparison with the Grand Cru of Musigny.

The second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Ch Margaux, is a small production gem, and the rare white, Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux, is one of Bordeaux’s most exciting white wines.

Chateau Margaux: An Iron Fist in A Velvet Glove

The eponymous estate of its appellation, Chateau Margaux, sits on a tremendous terroir of deep gravel that is perfectly suited to the Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 75% of the vines. The rest is made up of 20% Merlot with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Pockets of clay and limestone covered by gravel create a unique profile, and the soaring aromatics and beguiling mid-weight texture that are Chateau Margaux’s calling cards. There’s an uncommon delicacy to match the immense quality in Chateau Margaux that sets it apart from its peers.

Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux: A Sensational White

The Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux is a fantastic white. White wines have long been grown at the estate. In recent years, the white has been taken ever more seriously, and quality has jumped. A wine of opulence and weight, this is a wine that rivals the great dry whites of Pessac. However, with production generally sub 1,000 cases, there isn’t very much to go around.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 98

The 1996 Chateau Margaux stands as one of the pinnacles during Paul Pontallier’s illustrious tenure. I remember it dazzling out of barrel, perhaps my first memory of tasting wine at that prenatal stage. It has retained the fabulous tension and freshness on the nose, every atom infused with mineralite, subtle pressed flower/violet scents unfurling with aeration. The palate has unerring symmetry, perfectly balanced with filigree tannin and lovely acidity. It’s a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth and a touch of spice toward the finish show supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth…something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted July 2016. Wine Advocate 100

The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth, just a touch of spice towards the finish that shows supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth…something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted July 2016. JancisRobinson.com 18.0

Dark crimson. Very fine, together and fragrant. Sweet and very Margaux – super charming. Already quite evolved for a first growth! Lovely polish. Though you would need to distract from the fine tannins there in abundance on the finish. Very fresh. No shortage of acidity. A little fragile and spiky. [17/02/2011]

Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020

Vinous 96+

Bright full ruby. Pure, perfumed aromas of cassis and violet. Dense and tactile in the mouth; a huge, chewy wine with major extract but also considerable refinement. Almost painfully backward today, and a bit less perfumed than it was in the year or so after the bottling, but the huge tannins show no hardness. Another great expression of cabernet sauvignon from the ’96 vintage. Drink 2015 through 2040. [Stephen Tanzer, 07/01/2002]
