Producer Profile

Domaine Armand Rousseau – Burgundy Elite

Armand Rousseau is one of the finest producers on the planet. A titan of Burgundy, the reds from here are monumental examples of Pinot Noir at its imperious best. As Jasper Morris MW says, “This is one of Burgundy’s great domaines any way you look at it – in history, in holdings and in quality of wine.” His thoughts are echoed by Clive Coates MW, who says “There are few finer domaines in the Côte d’Or than that of Armand Rousseau… the winemaking perfectionist – and the wines themselves are stunning”

Attention to detail in the vineyards is meticulous, with incredibly precise control of yields and green harvesting if necessary. In the winery grapes are destemmed and only the Chambertin and Clos de Beze seeing 100% new oak. The wines are finessed and elegant, yet powerful and complex. They are magnificently, a factor that greatly increases their collectability.

The Wines – A Stunning Portfolio

As mentioned by Clive Coates, Rousseau has some spectacular and very enviable holdings in some of Burgundy’s premier addresses. The King and Queen of the portfolio are the mighty Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Beze. These are frequently among the best wines made in the whole of Burgundy. The flagship Chambertin is imperious, imposing and regal. The Clos de Beze more graceful, forgiving, yielding and a touch more approachable.

The next most famous wine in the line-up is perhaps not another Grand Cru, but one of the finest and most impressive of all 1er Crus, the Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques. This comes from a very special 1er Cru, for Jasper Morris, it is “Perfectly situated on a steep slope with exposure to both south and east, the Clos St Jacques might easily merit grand cru status”. Rousseau’s is the benchmark, the wine that has made Clos St Jacques the icon that it is.

The entire portfolio is superb, as is befitting one of fine wine’s elite producers.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 1996 Chambertin Grand Cru, a vintage that I have drunk three or four times previously, shows modest bricking on the rim. It has a gorgeous bouquet with decayed red fruit, roasted chestnut, undergrowth and a touch of wild mint. There is something effortless about the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that have softened in recent years. Open and expressive with a perfect bead of acidity, there is a judicious touch of spice and scintillate of greenness interlaced on the finish. After 26-years, this 1996 is reaching its peak, but the acidic spine suggests it will stay there for many years. Tasted at the Rousseau Chambertin vertical at La Vienne. [Neal Martin, 21/06/2022]

Antonio Galloni 97

A Burgundy of tension and bracing energy, the 1996 Rousseau Chambertin is simply magnificent on this night. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s stunning inner sweetness and perfume in what is an utterly glorious expression of Pinot Noir and Chambertin. I imagine the 1996 will still be compelling in 30 years’ time. Today is transcendental and deeply beautiful. [Antonio Galloni, 21/06/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2046

Vinous 95

From one of the greatest names in Burgundy, the 1996 Chambertin is a dark red with a hint of amber at the rim. Intense violet notes complicate strawberry, blueberry, smoke and Oriental spices on the deep, complex and very refined nose. The wine is fine-grained and elegant in the mouth, with smoky and floral elements lifting the red and dark berry flavors. Noteworthy acidity augments the palate sensation of still-firm tannins on the long finish, suggesting many years of life ahead. The Chambertin is a knockout wine very much in the mold of this slowly developing, high-acid vintage. [Ian D’Agata, 01/01/2016]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2024

Fine and fresh. Not luscious. Still lots of 1996 almost green acidity. Not a wine to wallow in but very fragrant. [07/12/2011]

Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020

Tasted blind at The Arches. This is an incredible Chambertin, perhaps one of the greatest wines overseen by Charles. Now at 13-years of age it has embellished that spellbinding bouquet, so luxuriant, almost spicy with pure red cherries, briary, something exotica Turkish delight? Breathtaking definition and purity. The palate is full-bodied, sensuous in texture, silky smooth filigree tannins that belie the power and the backbone present. Seamless. Just so effortless and refined with amazing focus on the finish. Black plum, cassis and blueberry. Moreover, you realise that this Chambertin has barely started motoring, this is a warm up for what will ultimately follow. Stunning. Drink 2012-2030. Tasted June 2009. [Neal Martin, 01/06/2009]

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030
