Chateau Margaux: The Musigny Of Bordeaux

While Lafite is characterised by elegance and sophistication, Latour by brooding power and Mouton by flamboyance and exuberance. The First Growth of Chateau Margaux is defined by its incredible perfumed aromatics and sense of weightless power. It is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove that, for some, bears comparison with the Grand Cru of Musigny.

The second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Ch Margaux, is a small production gem, and the rare white, Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux, is one of Bordeaux’s most exciting white wines.

Chateau Margaux: An Iron Fist in A Velvet Glove

The eponymous estate of its appellation, Chateau Margaux, sits on a tremendous terroir of deep gravel that is perfectly suited to the Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 75% of the vines. The rest is made up of 20% Merlot with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Pockets of clay and limestone covered by gravel create a unique profile, and the soaring aromatics and beguiling mid-weight texture that are Chateau Margaux’s calling cards. There’s an uncommon delicacy to match the immense quality in Chateau Margaux that sets it apart from its peers.

Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux: A Sensational White

The Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux is a fantastic white. White wines have long been grown at the estate. In recent years, the white has been taken ever more seriously, and quality has jumped. A wine of opulence and weight, this is a wine that rivals the great dry whites of Pessac. However, with production generally sub 1,000 cases, there isn’t very much to go around.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 92

The 1998 Chateau Margaux showed better than my previous bottle five or six years ago. Dark berry fruit mixed with pressed iris flower on the nose, a dab of potpourri and exotic flirtations with fig, this opens wonderfully in the glass. The palate is now mature with a crisp line of acidity, vibrant though not the most complex First Growth you will find. Haut-Brion is far superior in this vintage. It attenuates slightly towards its finish, though it is still an appealing Chateau Margaux without the frills. [Neal Martin, 16/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2048

JancisRobinson.com 19/20

Deep crimson. Powerful, direct aroma. Strongly cassis. Fresh and yet mouth-filling and almost creamy/buttery on the palate in terms of texture. Very clean and fresh. Hint of char. Very convincing as a first growth. Long and rich. Direct with masses of fruit disguising the slightly grainy tannins. Tangy and livelya You could drink this with food now! Very good wine. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2040

Wine Advocate 94

A deep garnet core with deep brick rim. The nose has moderate intensity, not the exuberance and exhilaration of the Haut-Brion, but expressive, with notes of blackberry, tar, a touch of leather and bilberry. What it does not have is Margaux’s signature aroma of violets – this is more reserved and masculine. The palate is medium-bodied, quite peppery upon entry with good acidity and balance, yet missing the femininity and the finesse that marks out say the 1999 or the 2001. The finish is quite dry, perhaps a little dour compared to other Chateau Margaux. Tasted March 2008. [Neal Martin, 01/03/2008]

Vinous 92+

Medium ruby. Cool, floral aromas of red berries, violet, cocoa powder, graphite and spicy oak, along with a whiff of smoked meat. Juicy, sharply delineated and austere; a classic, adamantly dry claret with superb intensity and grip. This is beginning to close up, unlike the ’99. But really expands on the very long, perfumed finish. Tannins are dusty but even. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2001]
