Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste – One Of Bordeaux’s Most Popular Wines

The Pauillac 5th Growth estate of Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is one of Bordeaux’s most popular chateaux. Combining classic style, real quality and class and very fair pricing, it’s a fantastic and affordable claret. It consistently punches above its price point and rarely puts a foot wrong.

The history of the estate goes back to the early 1700s, when the chateau that still stands was built. It was bought by the current owner, Francois-Xavier Borie in 1978 and in recent years has gone from strength to strength. Indeed, in the right vintages, this can get very close to Second or ever First Growth quality.

Grand Puy Lacoste is the first wine, with the second wine, Lacoste Borie, a charming sibling that provides a window into the house characteristics in a more open and forward style.

Quintessential Pauillac

Grand Puy Lacoste is one of the few properties in Bordeaux to have its vineyards in a single plot that surrounds the chateaux. These vineyards of cover some 90 hectares. They are composed of around 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Grand Vin is typically a blend of around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.

The style Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste could be described as quintessential Pauillac. Expect plenty of cassis, cigar box and graphite on the nose. On the palate there are structured tannins and fine acidity, essential for longevity, that surround a core of pure black fruit. There’s plenty of substance and power, but never too much weight. Give it a few years in bottle the result is a harmonious, complex, delicious and very satisfying Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 93

The 2001 Grand Puy-Lacoste is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade. It s showing some signs of bricking on the rim. The bouquet does not quite have the intensity of the previous vintage, but it unfolds nicely to reveal a melange of red and black fruit, tertiary aromas, gravel and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, grippy and much more youthful than the 2000, though it does not quite have the same complexity and terroir expression on the elegant finish. [Neal Martin, 22/09/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2021-2050

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

Good deep black crimson. Very nicely balanced and evolved. Very complete. Lifted and beautifully balanced. Very fresh and precise. Not as concentrated as some vintages of this wine (almost light!) but lovely now. [01/03/2012]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025

Wine Advocate 92

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. Showing some maturity on the rim, this has a very opulent bouquet with degraded fruit: crushed strawberry, pomegranate, chestnut, a touch of toffee and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight meaty edge on the entry, fresh acidity here, firm grip with a savoury touch on the sweet, fleshy finish. Very fine, though I am surprised I forward this bottle showed. Tasted March 2011. [Neal Martin, 01/03/2011]

Vinous 90

Red-ruby. Ripe aromas of dark chocolate, minerals and earth. Sweet and plummy, with a silky texture and lovely depth of flavor. Finishes with fine-grained tannins that spread out to coat the palate. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2004]
