Petrus: Luxury, Exclusivity and Quality

Pomerol’s Petrus is one of the world’s great wines. A name that stands for all that is luxurious and exclusive, allocations are highly prized and back-vintages are absolute treasures. Its inclusion is the hallmark of a truly world-class cellar.

Made in limited amounts from a fabulous terroir, Petrus is an icon and a benchmark for both the Pomerol appellation and Bordeaux itself.

Petrus has a long history, but soared in the latter half of the 20th Century to its current position at the very top of the fine wine tree and perhaps the most famous of all fine wines.

What Makes Petrus So Special?

The reputation of Petrus is built on this peerless quality. Petrus is a wine known for its extraordinary richness, power, concentration, and complexity.

The vineyard of Petrus covers 11.4 hectares in Pomerol, and 100% Merlot. The soil is composed of a unique and ancient sticky blue clay that is only found here. This clay is excellent for water retention, allowing the vines to cope well with any summer heat. They also give the wine its distinctive power and opulence that is delivered in a measured and sophisticated style. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and some of them are over 100 years old. This adds extra concentration, complexity and nuance.

These vines yield just 2,500 cases in a typical vintage, and they could be sold many times over, such is the demand.

Jane Anson sums up the style of Petrus nicely. “It combines wonderful aromatic persistency with waves of flavour.” Importantly, however, “what Petrus has over many other great Bordeaux is this simple pleasure at the same time – a seductive texture that is, well, just so simply enjoyable”. It is this that has made Petrus so beloved.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 93

An early September harvest in this hot year produced a 2003 that has reached full maturity. It offers notes of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, figs and black cherry jam. There are some rustic tannins in the finish, but this expansive, rich Petrus displays far more intensity and complexity than most expected given the difficulties in Pomerol in 2003. It should be consumed over the next 4-6 years. [Robert M. Parker, Jr., 28/08/2014]

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020

JancisRobinson.com 17.0

Slightly bricky garnet. Sweetly developed aroma of dried fruit and spices with a touch of herbaceousness too – and just a very slight hint of mint. Complex and unusual, perhaps odd? A sort of minty sweetness that reminds me of aged Coonawarra Cab. Much drier on the palate than I expected. Tannins are finer grained than most but relatively dry. Then it comes back juicy at the very end. A conundrum that really needs a whole evening to mull over. (JH) [21/03/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020

Vinous 93+

($1; 500-$2,000) Deep, healthy red-ruby color. Multidimensional aromas of mulberry, plum, smoked meat, leather and mocha are at once vibrant and slightly wild. Then sweet, densely packed and powerful, and showing little or no sign of the excesses of the vintage. This has a wonderfully tactile texture and great breadth on the back end. The tannins are sweet but firm and serious, giving the wine outstanding grip-even a touch of youthful austerity-for a 2003 from the right bank. This really coats the mouth. I’d keep my hands off this wine for at least seven or eight years. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2006]
