Le Pin: Tiny Production, Ultra-Collectable Pomerol

Since its inception in 1979, Pomerol’s Le Pin has risen to become one of Bordeaux’s most exclusive, desirable and expensive wines. Named after a lone pine tree that sits outside the winery, it is minuscule in production at just 600 cases or so in a typical vintage and immense in quality. Allocations are some of the region’s most fiercely fought over and cherished.

Le Pin: Opulence, Decadence and Luxury

The unique terroir here at this tiny patch of Pomerol is responsible for Le Pin’s opulent and hedonistic style. The Grand Vin comes from a tiny, 2.8ha plot of Merlot that sits on deep gravel and iron-rich clay. Under the brilliant perfectionist owner Jacques Thienpont, who has a relentless and exacting drive for quality, the wines from here are consistently outstanding.

L’If and L’Hetre: Two Gems From The Same Superb Stable

While the price of Le Pin puts it out of the reach of many, there are options for those who want an insight into the winemaking here at a fraction of the price. Chateau L’If is a project of the Thienpont’s from St Emilion and is excellent. Chateau L’Hetre comes from vines in the Cotes de Bordeaux and is an outright bargain. Both are made by the same team and with the same level of care and expertise as the Grand Vin. They are well worth snapping up as they are relative bargains.

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 92

Tasted at Bipin Desai’s Le Pin vertical in Los Angeles. A deep ruby colour. The nose is relatively linear compared to other vintages of Le Pin with red-berried fruit: cranberry, raspberry and traces of tar and dark chocolate. Good definition, albeit a little conservative. The palate is elegant and well balanced with a fine structure, notes of raspberry, cranberry and wild strawberry, a lightweight Le Pin with just a little dryness towards the finish. This is a Le Pin that opts to play it safe and should provide pleasurable medium-term drinking. A comparatively generous vintage of 780 cases. Drink now-2018. Tasted November 2008. Vinous 92-94

(tasted from cuve Classic Le Pin perfume of raspberry, cocoa powder and toasty oak, with an ineffable topnote of orange peel. Wonderfully delicate and precise in the mouth, with flavors and texture that reminded me of great Burgundy. The vibrant, utterly pure flavors of crushed raspberry, minerals, flowers and spices go on and on on the aftertaste, which does not show the oaky torrefaction of the young 2005. A great and subtle expression of merlot on the Pomerol plateau. I am not sure that the 2005 will surpass this. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2006]

JancisRobinson.com 17.5+

[There are all of 500 cases of this to go round and the Pin cellar is looking unusually full after last year’s zero production.] Extremely deep purple with a crimson rim. Explosively sumptuous nose with lots of freshness and floral scents. Rich and round with the merest suggestion of a corset of very fine tannins. Not nearly as opulent on the palate – big, round and meaty with a very dry, quite sudden finish. [05/04/2005]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022
