Domane Anne Gros: A Vosne-Romanée Pioneer

Based in the heart of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Anne Gros is one of the most respected estates in the Côte de Nuits. Anne Gros took control of the family property in 1988, initially bottling under the name Domaine Anne et François Gros before transitioning to the current label in 1995. As one of the early female winemaking pioneers in a traditionally male-dominated region, Anne redefined the estate by modernising the cellars and consolidating its vineyard footprint. Today, she works alongside her children, Julie and Paul Tollot, managing a compact yet exceptionally prestigious portfolio of roughly 6.5 hectares. The estate is managed with a deep respect for biodiversity, employing organic and biodynamic principles without seeking formal certification to maintain maximum flexibility in the vineyards.

An Elegant, Aromatic, and Unforced Style

The overarching winemaking style at Domaine Anne Gros is defined by its silkiness, aromatic purity, and unforced elegance. Eschewing the heavily extracted or heavily structural style, Anne and her family craft Pinot Noirs that favour perfume, fluid grace, and immediate terroir expression. In the cellar, the grapes are fully destemmed and undergo a gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fresh fruit character. The wines are aged for up to 16 months in French oak barrels, with a disciplined approach to new wood, typically around 30% for village wines and up to 80% for the grand crus. The resulting wines are celebrated for their seamless integration, displaying bright berry notes, fine-grained tannins, and a persistent, vibrant finish.

Precision Quality and Legendary Grand Crus

The exceptional quality and global demand for Domaine Anne Gros are driven by meticulous vineyard management and access to an enviable collection of historic old vines. The crown jewel of the estate is a prized 0.60-hectare parcel in the Grand Cru Richebourg, featuring vines planted across multiple generations dating back to the 1920s. This is complemented by significant holdings in the Grand Crus of Clos de Vougeot (Le Grand Maupertui) and Échezeaux (Les Loächausses), alongside the highly sought-after Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux village vineyard. By strictly regulating yields and focusing on absolute physiological ripeness, the estate delivers remarkable consistency across vintages. These highly allocated Burgundies possess an innate balance that allows them to be accessible in their youth while retaining the structural components to age beautifully for decades. Learn more about Domaine Anne Gros here

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 94

The 2005 Richebourg Grand Cru marks the transition to the domaine’s contemporary style, wafting from the glass with a rich and fruit-driven bouquet of cassis, plums and black raspberries that’s framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with a deep and fleshy profile that’s still quite wrapped up in its fine-grained tannic chassis, buttressed by tangy acids. In its impactful, modernist style it’s quite a success, though it’s still several years away from prime-time drinking. [William Kelley, 17/07/2019]

Vinous 96+

Good deep red-ruby. Pungent dark raspberry, violet, bitter chocolate and orange zest on the nose. The palate explodes with urgent crushed berry, floral and mineral flavors, showing great richness but none of the obvious warm side of the vintage. The palate-staining, mounting finish, still a bit brooding, features noble tannins and lingering notes of dark fruits, flowers and licorice. These wines have all turned out at the high end of my projected ratings a year ago and should be cellar treasures. [Stephen Tanzer, 03/01/2008]

Notably healthy colour and lots of lovely crackling fruit. Dry finish with some bitterness, almost quinine on the finish, and vigour. Very fine. These Anne Gros wines are very much not fruit bombs, but confidently chiselled, beautifully balanced expressions of place. Very pure and unadorned and I would expect it to take on flesh although it will surely always be very fine-boned. [04/08/2007]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025
