Domaine Comtes de Vogue: A Chambolle-Musigny Institution

Based in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüéstands as the definitive, aristocratic reference point for the village of Chambolle-Musigny. Tracing its noble viticultural roots back over five centuries to 1450, the estate has remained under the ownership of the same family line for over twenty generations. The modern era of unparalleled prestige was solidified under the late Comte Georges de Vogüé and is brilliantly maintained today by a highly disciplined management team, managing roughly 12.6 hectares of the most coveted slopes in Burgundy, including a huge chunk of Musigny. The domain treats its historic old-vine material with an artisanal, hands-on reverence, serving as a timeless benchmark for fine wine collectors worldwide.

A Style of Aristocratic Austerity and Crystalline Symmetry

The defining winemaking philosophy at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé values structural integrity and historic transparency over early, easy-drinking cosmetic appeal. Sourced from deep limestone soils, the Pinot Noir grapes are vinified with a highly disciplined approach. In the cellar, the grapes are almost entirely destemmed to preserve a pure, unadulterated fruit profile, followed by a gentle fermentation using native yeasts in traditional wooden vats. The estate enforces a remarkably restrained oak regimen, typically capping new French wood at around 35% for the grand crus and just 15% for village wines. This patient, non-interventionalist ageing yields a wine of immense multi-layered concentration, matching a chiselled mineral drive and high natural acidity with a fine-grained, chalky tannic framework that demands significant time in the cellar to fully unwind.

Comtes de Vogue’s Incredible Holdings

The world-class reputation and blue-chip investment status surrounding the estate are anchored by its majestic, unparalleled dominance of the grand crus of Chambolle-Musigny. The domain is the largest owner of the legendary Musigny Grand Cru, holding an astonishing 7.2 hectares that comprise the absolute heart of this iconic hill. They also own a substantial, prime 2.7-hectare block of Bonnes-Mares and a historic parcel of Premier Cru Les Amoureuses. Notably, the estate produces a mythic, ultra-rare white Musigny Blanc from a tiny plot of Chardonnay, a wine that was famously labelled as Bourgogne Blanc for decades until the vines reached a mature age worthy of Grand Cru status.

A real inside tip is the Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru. This is made from de Vogue’s younger vines within the Grand Cru of Musigny but is declassified down into a 1er Cru. It’s a Musigny in disguise and well worth seeking out.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 96

Medium to deep ruby. The nose is intoxicatingly fragranced with enticing notes of jasmine, violets, milk chocolate, red cherries and wild strawberries. The medium+ bodied palate provides fairly high acidity, a medium+ level of silky tannins and adds a very fine touch of minerality to the perfumed fruit. Very long, elegant finish. Drink 2010 – 2020+. Tasted November 2008. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 01/01/2009]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020

Vinous 98+

Bright, dark, saturated red-ruby. Pungent, noble aromas and flavors of raspberry, flowers, white pepper and powdered stone. Enters the palate with a wonderful lightness, then mounts impressively toward the back and saturates the entire mouth with fruits, spices, minerals and earth. As flamboyantly sweet as this wine is today, it’s most remarkable for its power, definition, energy and cut. The tannins are still a bit youthfully spiky but this extremely backward wine finishes with superb thrust, grip and persistence. It’s hard to imagine that this wine won’t gain in texture and complexity over the next 20 to 30 years of aging in a cold cellar. [Stephen Tanzer, 03/01/2008]

From 25 to 55 year-old vines. Wonderfully subtly graded crimson. Very heady nose already. The malo finished in July 2006. Very complex and velvety already. This wine caresses the senses. Beautiful texture. Very, very fresh and elegant, lifted and lively. That precision of Amoureuses again but with much more voluptuousness. This wine expresses something that has absolutely nothing to do with ‘winemaking’ – juts place. Very fine tannins on the finish. Wonderful elegance. Seductive but in a very cerebral way somehow. This wine smells so amazingly fresh, in complete contrast to the more worked noses of the Dominique Laurent wines tasted earlier that day. Tasting the two wines alongside, it’s easy to imagine Amoureuses as a subset of the Musigny There is minerality, elegance and sensuality too. Real eclat. [13/08/2007]

Anticipated maturity: 2015-2032
