Dom Perignon Champagne: The Epitome of Luxury

The most famous of Champagnes and one of the most recognisable brands on the planet, Dom Perignon is emblematic of exclusivity, luxury and all things ‘fine’. This reputation is richly deserved.

The History of Dom Perignon

Dom Perignon is named after a Benedictine monk who was a 17th-century monk and winemaking pioneer. Owners Moet & Chandon released their first vintage in the 1930s, and it has since gone on to achieve global fame. It is a must for collectors and connoisseurs and a fixture on the wine lists of top restaurants, clubs and nightclubs.

The Style and Substance

Dom Perignon is a classic blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, always from a single vintage. Access to a peerless array of crus and the finest grapes produced within those vintages means that consistent quality is always guaranteed. Winemaking is no expense spared and second to none. It is always released with significant bottle age, which allows the wine time to mature and gain complexity and depth.

The house style is one of intensity, structure and power while always remaining elegant, refined and balanced. While every vintage is different, the theme that runs throughout the years is poise, sophistication and class.

The Dom Perignon P2 & P3

Dom Perignon is revered for its magnificent ageing potential. Experienced tasters have, however, noted that it tends to go through periods where it is open and expressive before closing for a few years only to open again. Dom Perignon calls these periods ‘Plenitudes’ of maturity. It is a time when the champagne has a perfect sense of completeness and harmony. For this reason it keeps small amounts back and releases them from its cellars under the rare P2 and even rarer P3 labels, only when the expert Cellar Masters have decided that they are showing particularly well. Thanks to their rarity, maturity and provenance, these are instant collectors items.

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 97

The 2006 Dom Perignon Rose is powerful, ample and overt right out of the gate. Then again, the Dom Perignon Champagnes have always shown all the signature radiant intensity of this warm year. Readers will find an ample, full-bodied Rose, a Champagne that will be as its most expressive and delicious at the dinner table. In this tasting, the 2006 only suffers because of the surrounding wines, but it is exceptional in every way. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2046

vinum 95+

Moderately deep salmon pink. Evolved bouquet with notes of summer pudding fruit and dried petals, yet still fresh and enveloping. There is a deep DP character of richness and toast at its core but you have to seek it out behind the fruit. Begins generous, with a taut citrus acidity and blood orange notes. Intense in its focus but has plenty of flesh and richness around the edges. Raspberry and strawberry fruit persists delicatey onto the finish which then fans out into a peacock’s tail. There’s an inner sweetness and an over-riding sense of gentle, caressing fruit. Really interesting as it seems to grow in the glass, gaining in richness and DP-ness with air. Sneaky and scented acid-driven length. [Matthew Hemming, 01/04/2020]

Wine Advocate 95

The 2006 Dom Perignon Rose continues to show very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of bitter orange, dried white flowers, red berries, toast and woodsmoke. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, broad and muscular, with all the phenolic structure and depth that one would expect from a rose that contains more than 20% still red wine, concluding with a sapid and chalky finish. As I wrote earlier this year, this is a vinous, gastronomic rose that numbers among the decided successes of the 2006 vintage. [William Kelley, 10/08/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040
