Chateau L’Eglise Clinet: A Pomerol Great

Pomerol’s Chateau L’Eglise Clinet is one of the most revered wine estates in Bordeaux. Made truly great by the late genius Denis Durantou, it is a wine that is emblematic of all that is best in the Pomerol appellation.

L’Eglise Clinet has a long history, dating back to the 19th century. It was formerly part of fellow Pomerol estate, Chateau Clinet but, in 1954, it was separated from Clinet and acquired by the Durantou family, who still own and manage it today.

Denis Durantou took control in 1983, and his meticulous and perfectionist approach took L’Eglise Clinet to new heights. Its rise has been stratospheric and is a fitting tribute to one of Bordeaux’s most talented winemakers. Sadly, Durantou passed away in 2020, but the wine remains in the safe hands of his daughters Noemie and Constance Durantou.

Immaculate Pomerol Of The Highest Quality

The vineyards of L’Eglise Clinet are tiny. They total just 3/5ha and are so small that harvest could be done in a day. Jane Anson, however, notes that it “invariably takes a week”, such is the care applied. It is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The soil is a mix of gravel, sand, and clay, which gives the wines the distinctive minerality and freshness which is key to their brilliance.

The raw materials were always exceptional, and the brilliant Denis Durantou fully harnessed their potential during his tenure. L’Eglise Clinet is a wine of effortless class. It combines complexity, power and depth with elegance, finesse and sophistication. It is a Pomerol of uncommon balance and immense, immaculate quality.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 90

Tasted single blind at FINE magazine’s vertical in Dusseldorf. This has a very pure dark ruby core " very limpid. The nose is also very pure with macerated dark cherries, cassis and just a touch of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight mocha-tinged entry, slightly lower acidity lending this a supple texture but nicely balance and generous with a caressing finish with Cabernet Franc lending a slight meaty touch. Tasted February 2011. [Neal Martin, 01/02/2011]

JancisRobinson.com 16.0

10,500 bottles produced. 100% Merlot from gravely clay soils. Mid crimson. Quite opulent on the nose though a firm spine. Chewy. Then very sandy dry tannins on the finish. Far from charming. Very dry and severe in fact. Austere though quite persistent finish. [07/08/2007]

Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016
