Pol Roger Champagne: Elegant, Balanced, Complete

Pol Roger is one of the great Champagne houses and a true connoisseur’s choice. The style here is superb: poised, focused and perfectly balanced between power and elegance.

The house was founded in 1849 by Pol Roger, a young entrepreneur, and quickly became popular among the nobles of Europe thanks to its quality, refinement and panache. Remarkably, the house is still owned by his descendants.

The White Foil Non-Vintage is the calling card of the house and is consistently excellent, while the luxury cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is Pol Roger’s exclusive and collectable Grande Marque.

Pol Roger & Sir Winston Churchill

The statesman Winston Churchill is perhaps Pol Roger’s most famous devotee. Indeed, he was such a loyal customer that Pol Roger used to supply him with custom-made pint-sized bottles. Churchill apparently thought this was the ideal size for a Champagne bottle.

The connection with Churchill led the Champagne house to name its flagship luxury cuvee after him. It is designed to be reflective of the Pol Roger style when Churchill was consuming it.

The Sir Winston Churchill is a vintage Champagne. It is based on a single year and is only made when the conditions allow for sufficient quality to be achieved. It is held back in Pol Roger’s cellars to ensure complexity, but also so that it can be enjoyed on release. The blend is a closely guarded secret, but it is dominated by Pinot Noir. The result is powerful, complex and, in Pol Roger’s words, “Robust”.

Tasting Notes

JancisRobinson.com 18.5

Disgorged November 2016. To be launched end of September 2017. Mainly Pinot Noir. Deep with impressively lively and tiny bead. Very intense with a fresh mint note. Round and magnificent. Excellent freshness. Impossible to spit. Beautiful balance. Satin-textured. Not as cigar-fumed as some vintages! A little mushroomy. [29/08/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030
