Château Angelus: The Pinnacle of St Emilion Elegance
One of Bordeaux’s most famous estates, Chateau Angelus is nestled in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation. With a legacy dating back to 1782, Angélus has consistently set the standard for exceptional Bordeaux wines. The estate combines tradition and innovation to become one of Bordeaux’s most consistent and recognisable names.
As well as the Grand Vin, Chateau Angelus produces an excellent second wine, Carillon d’Angelus, which comes from specific parcels of vines.
Chateau Angelus: A Family Jewel Across the Generations
Angélus is a family-owned estate with a rich heritage and a relentless pursuit of excellence in winemaking. The estate spans 42 hectares planted predominantly with Merlot (around 50%) and Cabernet Franc (around 47%) vines. The unique terroir includes vines planted on the famous St. Emilion limestone and clay soils that impart distinctive characteristics to the wines. The Boüard de Laforest has a history in Bordeaux that dates back to 1544 but it was their arrival in St. Emilion in 1910 and subsequent purchase of a parcel of vines known as the Clos L’Angelus in 1922 that signalled the beginning of the modern era of the Angélus estate.
The wines from Chateau Angélus usually require some patience before showing their at their best. Once mature Chateau Angelus is a wine that is suave and full of panache yet also pure, elegant and velvety in texture. These are wines at the very pinnacle of the St Emilion style.
Underperformance Turns into Greatness
After its heyday in the 1950s Angélus began to be considered as a perennial underperformer. This was up until 1989 when Hubert de Bouard joined the family estate. Having studied under the great Emile Peynaud at Bordeaux University, Hubert modernised winemaking practices and lowered yields. This ushered in a new era in which Angélus has become of the most revered names in all of Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
Neal Martin 93
The 2008 Angelus is a vintage that I have tasted many times. It boasts a rich but fortunately not overbearing bouquet adorned with macerated red cherries, camphor, hints of jalapeno pepper and later, a tang of dried blood, almost ferrous. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth polished tannin matched with well judged acidity. It is backward in style to the point that you could almost describe it as "charmless", though that is by dint of its youthfulness. It just needs time. Signaling that this Angelus clams up towards the finish as if to say: "Too early". You know what? It is probably right. (Tasted at the chateau and at BI Wine & Spirits’ annual vertical tasting.)

Wine Advocate 93
A strong effort in this under-appreciated vintage that sold for a song, the 2008 Angelus is still young and vibrant, with a dense purple color and a sweet kiss of chocolate-infused blackberries and blackcurrants. There are some floral notes, as well as forest floor and lead pencil nuances. Medium to full-bodied with ripe tannin and outstanding equilibrium and purity, this is another beauty from a much more challenging vintage. Drink now through 2030.

Dark ruby. Oak seems rather obvious on the nose. Plus some evolution. Warm and toasty nose but a bit skinny and short of palate weight in the middle. A little more luscious and fresh than the 2011.

Vinous 92
Bright red-ruby. Plum, cedar shavings and sexy chocolatey oak on the nose. Lush and seamless in the mouth, with a restrained sweetness to the flavors of plum, smoke, licorice and mint. Conveys a delightlfully weightless quality. Lovely elegant, balanced 2008, with nothing excessive about it. The cabernet franc contributes perfume and definition.
