Kongsgaard: “Artisanal wines at their finest” – Robert Parker

California’s Kongsgaard is one of the Napa Valley’s most exciting and interesting wineries. The winery was founded in 1996 and quickly achieved cult status thanks to the world-class nature of the wines made here.

The wines, both red and white, are made in a non-interventionist style by the brilliant John and Maggie Kongsgaard, and now their son Alex. All are tremendous in quality, with a style well summed up by Robert Parker, who called them “reds and whites that represent the essence of their varietal, vintage and vineyard”.

Cult-Collectable Napa Reds and Whites

Kongsgaard is perhaps most famous for its white wines. The Kongsgaard Chardonnay is a benchmark for California and often an instant sell-out on release. Consequently, there is never much available on the market to buy. The Judge Chardonnay is the jewel in the crown when it comes to the whites. It comes from a small vineyard, and just a couple of hundred cases are made in a typical vintage. These cases are some of the Napa Valley’s most sought-after.

The Kongsgaard reds are also outstanding. Kongsgaard Syrah is the flagship red and comes from a tiny 2-acre plot. This translates to just a few hundred cases of a Syrah that can rival the very best made anywhere in the world.

Also worth looking out for is the Kongsgaard Cabernet Sauvignon. This comes from the Eastern side of the Valley from a plot at 2,300 feet. Very ‘old world’ in style, it is classically structured and very age-worthy.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 94

An intense, exotic wine, the 2008 Chardonnay The Judge is showing beautifully today. Gunflint, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white stone fruits are all very much alive in the glass in a Judge with distinctly Burgundian overtones. The flintn and mercaptan notes are especially pronounced in this vintage. [Antonio Galloni, 11/01/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018

Vinous 95

Bright, pale yellow-green. Pungent flinty minerality, underripe apricot and brown spices on the nose. Plush and rich but with terrific cut and definition to the stone fruit flavors. Best today on the rising, extremely long finish, which displays almost salty acidity and a brisk grapefruit note. Kongsgaard believes that this wine has more fat to buffer its tannins than the 2008 Judge, and that it will be best for medium-term drinking. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2011]

Wine Advocate 97

The 2008 Chardonnay The Judge is exquisite. Full-bodied with layer upon layer of ripe stone fruits, crushed rocks, and floral notes, it is a honeyed, super-rich Chardonnay displaying a hint of tropical fruits in the long, 40-second finish (a remarkable length for a Chardonnay). This brilliant effort should last for 8-10 years. Part viticultural evangelist, part wine wizard and part musical composer, John Kongsgaard remains one of the more singular personalities and interesting wine producers of Napa Valley. I have written many times about his a oedeath and resurrectiona theory of winemaking, and whether one agrees or disagrees with him is irrelevant. The proof is in vino veritas, and that’s exactly what he does year in and year out. With the exception of his Syrah from the Hudson Vineyard and his Cabernet Sauvignon from David Abreu’s vineyards in St. Helena, everything is produced from the estate vineyard, a 6-acre parcel high in the mountains off Coombsville Road. For a number of years, Kongsgaard has produced a small quantity (200 cases) of a Chardonnay called The Judge (an homage to his father). Although it is aged in 100% new oak for at least 20 months, it reveals no evidence of wood. Like the regular Chardonnay, The Judge is made from an Old Wente clone of Chardonnay that is believed to have come from cuttings of the Corton-Charlemagne holdings of Louis Latour at least fifty years ago. Kongsgaard’s touch with Bordeaux varietals is not as magical as it is with Chardonnay and Syrah. Nevertheless, these are still outstanding efforts, and I think his 2009 Proprietary Red will match his finest vintage to date, the 2007. Fax (707) 226-2936 [Robert M. Parker, Jr., 23/12/2010]
