Salon Champagne: The Best Of The Best
Even in a region renowned for luxury and exclusivity, Salon Champagne stands out as something special. Made only in the best vintages and then in tiny numbers, this blanc de blancs is rare, elusive and, thanks to world-class quality, immensely desirable.
The Champagne expert Richard Juhlin sums up nicely what creates the mystique around Salon. For him, “Salon is the most sought-after Champagne among connoisseurs. This magnificent wine is so rare that only a few people have had the chance to taste the quintessence of Le Mesnil.”
Salon: A Superstar From The Famed Cru Of Mesnil
Salon is 100% Chardonnay from Champagne’s finest Chardonnay Cru, Mesnil. The average age of the vines is around 50 years old, and some are from a unique microclimate, which means the grapes ripen beautifully.
There is no malolactic fermentation to soften the acidity, so Salon demands plenty of age to show at its best. It is more than worth the wait as mature Salon is a thing of beauty. Again, to quote Richard Juhlin, “Salon expresses a gigantically broad aromatic spectrum, and has a Burgundy-like vinosity… it is unmatched in terms of class and purity”.
Salon: A Rare Bird
As mentioned, Salon is made only in the very best vintages. It was produced only 33 times between 1945 and 2012. A mere 60,000 bottles are all that are made in a typical vintage, minuscule in Champagne terms. This means there is never very much to go around. Unsurprisingly, it has developed a fanatical following and is a must for any complete cellar.

Antonio Galloni 100
I knew it the moment I tasted it. The 2008 Cuvee S, bottled only in magnum, is perfect. I can ask nothing more. Citrus, sage, mint, white pepper, crushed rocks and oyster shells explode onto the palate. Complex and nuanced, with tons of saline intensity, the 2008 is an archetype. A truly great vintage for one of the most important wines in Champagne. Readers lucky to own it are in for an unforgettable experience.

Disgorged in January 2019 with six grams per liter dosage, Salon’s 2008 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil is a striking wine, unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus oil, fresh bread, crisp green apple, white flowers, smoke and oyster shell. Full-bodied, layered and incisive, it’s deep and concentrated, with a tightly coiled core of fruit that’s underpinned by a racy spine of acidity. Seamless and unerringly precise, it concludes with a long and penetratingly mineral finish. Immense though its potential for aging is, its intensity and balance make it pleasurable as well as persuasive, even today. Given the eye-watering price of this magnum-only release, I was determined to hold the wine to the highest possible standards, but it surpasses even the prodigious 1996 and surely ranks as the finest Salon since at least the 1970s. In short, this is a Blanc de Blancs that admits no argument.
