Chateau Latour: An Iconic Bordeaux First Growth

Towering, imposing and immense, Chateau Latour is a true connoisseur’s First Growth. From a prime plot in Pauillac, the Grand Vin from here is among Bordeaux’s and, indeed the world’s best and is rightly revered. The second wine, Les Forts de Latour, is also magical, a match for many classed growths in quality.

Chateau Latour: A Unique Terroir & Intoxicating Style

Chateau Latour is blessed with one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. Planted with a classic Left Bank blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it has a near-perfect aspect stretching down to the Gironde.

The soils here are characterised by having a much higher percentage of clay (the same type as found at Chateau Petrus in Pomerol) under the covering of gravel than Lafite, for example. This terroir translates to a rich, intense, powerful and intoxicating style.

This magnificent vineyard is allied to some of the most meticulous, precise and outright impressive winemaking on the planet, which means a wine against which all are measured.

The Withdrawal From En Primeur

The En Primeur season, which occurs in the spring and early summer after the previous harvest, when the Château of Bordeaux releases their wines as futures, is one of the key events of the season. Latour, however, no longer takes part. The 2012 vintage was the last vintage of Latour released as a future, and since then, all releases have been from physical stocks in Latour’s cellars.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 98

The 2009 Latour has an open and generous bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of graphite and loam. This vintage displays a light marine/brine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a firm grip and superb balance. This is very focused, with impressive salinity on the finish that lingers nicely. This is an extraordinarily beautiful Latour. Tasted blind from double magnum at a 20-year retrospective at the chateau. [Neal Martin, 07/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2060

Wine Advocate 100

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Latour is unashamedly youthful with bold blackcurrants, black cherries and warm plums notes plus nuances of cedar chest, aniseed, beef drippings, truffles and tapenade with a waft of tilled black soil. Full, concentrated and powerful in the mouth, it has a rock-solid frame of super ripe, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully minerally. Just a babya this needs time! [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 23/02/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2080

JancisRobinson.com 19/20

Tasted blind. Lustrous deep crimson. Sweet yet refined. Recalls juggling or tightrope-walking with its mixture of ripeness and freshness. Dry finish on wonderfully precise sweet fruit. Still very youthful. Clean. Highest average score ever! 19.24 because of five 20/20s. [14/02/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2050

Vinous 96+

Deep purple-ruby. Pungent floral and spice notes enliven complex aromas of dark plum, cocoa and minerals. Large-scaled and juicy, with lively acidity giving sharp definition to the uncommonly deep, pure flavors of black fruits, forest floor and dark spices. The impressively ripe, powerful finish features youthfully chewy tannins and outstanding persistence. This big boy will require a lot of patience: forget about it in the cellar for at least 15 years. [Stephen Tanzer, 07/01/2012]
