Chateau Latour: An Iconic Bordeaux First Growth

Towering, imposing and immense, Chateau Latour is a true connoisseur’s First Growth. From a prime plot in Pauillac, the Grand Vin from here is among Bordeaux’s and, indeed the world’s best and is rightly revered. The second wine, Les Forts de Latour, is also magical, a match for many classed growths in quality.

Chateau Latour: A Unique Terroir & Intoxicating Style

Chateau Latour is blessed with one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. Planted with a classic Left Bank blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it has a near-perfect aspect stretching down to the Gironde.

The soils here are characterised by having a much higher percentage of clay (the same type as found at Chateau Petrus in Pomerol) under the covering of gravel than Lafite, for example. This terroir translates to a rich, intense, powerful and intoxicating style.

This magnificent vineyard is allied to some of the most meticulous, precise and outright impressive winemaking on the planet, which means a wine against which all are measured.

The Withdrawal From En Primeur

The En Primeur season, which occurs in the spring and early summer after the previous harvest, when the Château of Bordeaux releases their wines as futures, is one of the key events of the season. Latour, however, no longer takes part. The 2012 vintage was the last vintage of Latour released as a future, and since then, all releases have been from physical stocks in Latour’s cellars.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 95

The 2009 Les Forts de Latour has a very classy bouquet with finely tuned, almost understated black fruit laced with tobacco and cedar at first, then it blossoms with aeration and reveals quite stupendous precision. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. This is extremely balanced and precise with more depth and persistent than the 2009 Le Petit Mouton tasted alongside. Deeply impressive. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits’ Ten Year On tasting. [Neal Martin, 14/03/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2045

Wine Advocate 95

The deep garnet colored 2009 Les Forts de Latour springs forth with minted chocolate, blackberry pie, sweaty leather and cast iron pan notes with hints of bay leaves and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied and laden with muscular black fruit preserves and savory layers, it has a firm, grainy frame and lovely freshness, finishing with a minty kick. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 23/02/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2040

JancisRobinson.com 17/20

Tasted blind. Particularly deep crimson. Pretty lustrous. Intense, sweet, polished and worked. Definitely expresses the vintage though it has less obvious tannins than many. Already easily broachable " is it dangerously evolved? Some heat on the end. [14/02/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030

Antonio Galloni 91

The 2009 Les Forts de Latour shows the richness of the vintage in its dark, slightly roasted flavors. Ample and sumptuous in the glass, the 2009 drinks well now, but it also gives the impression of limited upside, so I would not hang on to it for more than a handful of years. Mocha, espresso, dark fruit and spices add to a feeling of weight and power. [Antonio Galloni, 07/01/2016]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2024

Vinous 90+

Ruby-red. Pungently fragrant aromas of blackcurrant and cedar complicated by quinine and bay leaf. Rich, dense and suave, with rather brooding flavors of blackberry, plum liqueur, aromatic herbs and forest floor. This has shut down since the Primeurs and will need patience. Lacks only the generosity of the grand vin but should be outstanding. And it’s a remarkable second wine. [Stephen Tanzer, 07/01/2012]
