Vietti: A Castiglione Falletto Legend

Based in the village of Castiglione Falletto, Vietti is an institutional estate that has fundamentally shaped the modern history and global reputation of Piedmont. Rooted in winemaking traditions dating back to the 19th century, the winery rose to international prominence under the visionary leadership of Luciana Vietti and her husband, the legendary winemaker Alfredo Currado. Alfredo was a pioneer who helped save the native Erbaluce and Arneis varieties from extinction and was among the first to bottle single-vineyard Barolos in the 1960s.

Today, following a transition in ownership to the Krause family and the retirement of longtime winemaker Luca Currado Vietti, the estate maintains its uncompromising standard of excellence across a diverse, highly coveted portfolio that highlights the region’s absolute finest terroirs.

A Style of Vineyard Clarity and Geometric Balance

The defining winemaking philosophy at Vietti bridges a deep respect for regional heritage with impeccable technical execution, resulting in wines marked by intense varietal purity and geometric balance that harnesses the best of the old and new. The estate manages an extraordinary patchwork of vineyards across all eleven Barolo communes, allowing them to showcase a wide spectrum of microclimates and soil compositions.

In the cellar, each vineyard parcel is vinified and aged separately to preserve its unique terroir signature before final blending or single-vineyard bottling. The red wines undergo traditional, lengthy macerations and are aged in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks (botti) and neutral French oak barrels. This precise approach yields wines that balance rich, multi-layered concentration with a driving acidity and highly refined, integrated tannins.

Huge Quality Across The Vietti Portfolio

The world-class quality and blue-chip status associated with Vietti are anchored by an elite tier of single-vineyard Barolo Crus that represent the pinnacle of the region. The portfolio includes legendary names such as Barolo Rocche di Castiglione, Brunate, Lazzarito, and Ravera, alongside their rare, monumental Barolo Riserva Villero, which is produced only in exceptional vintages.

Vietti is also globally recognised for its artist label series and its benchmark Barbera d’Asti “Vigna la Vecchia Scassata.” Through rigorous green harvesting, low yields, and strict sorting, the winemaking team delivers magnificent stylistic consistency across varying vintages.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 95

Luca recently purchased more land in the Lazzarito cru. The 2009 Barolo Lazzarito delivers subdued notes of red rose and violet that build in intensity as the wine takes on more air in the glass. Black fruit, plum, cassis, leather, tar and licorice soon follow suit. This wine is an absolute, drop-dead stunner. Its tannic crispness makes it feel lively and buoyant in the mouth. The wine shows heft and importance that become firmly etched in the mouth. Each time I went back to the glass, the wine told a new story. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. If forced to inhabit a desert island that only served the wines of a single producer, I would want Luca Currado to be that supplier. He excels at everything he does from his castle perch at the heart of Castiglione Falletto. Despite the difficult 2009 season, his wines remain extraordinary. In fact, they are among the best I tasted from the vintage. Importer: Dalla Terra Winery Direct, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 259-5405 [Monica Larner, 28/06/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035

Vinous 92

Good bright, dark red. Smoky raspberry, menthol and mint on the rather exuberant nose, accented by black pepper. Densely packed, plump and glyceral, with strong acidity giving shape to the flavors of strawberry, minerals, herbs and brown spices. Really spreads out on the back end. [Stephen Tanzer, 11/01/2013]

Antonio Galloni 93

The 2009 Barolo Lazzarito is another layered, expressive Barolo. The hallmarks of this site in Serralunga emerge only gradually over time. My sense is that the 2009 still has a lot to say. Tar, smoke, licorice, plums, soy and incense are some of the nuances that flesh out on the rich, resonant finish. [Antonio Galloni, 04/01/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029
