Chateau Latour: An Iconic Bordeaux First Growth

Towering, imposing and immense, Chateau Latour is a true connoisseur’s First Growth. From a prime plot in Pauillac, the Grand Vin from here is among Bordeaux’s and, indeed the world’s best and is rightly revered. The second wine, Les Forts de Latour, is also magical, a match for many classed growths in quality.

Chateau Latour: A Unique Terroir & Intoxicating Style

Chateau Latour is blessed with one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. Planted with a classic Left Bank blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it has a near-perfect aspect stretching down to the Gironde.

The soils here are characterised by having a much higher percentage of clay (the same type as found at Chateau Petrus in Pomerol) under the covering of gravel than Lafite, for example. This terroir translates to a rich, intense, powerful and intoxicating style.

This magnificent vineyard is allied to some of the most meticulous, precise and outright impressive winemaking on the planet, which means a wine against which all are measured.

The Withdrawal From En Primeur

The En Primeur season, which occurs in the spring and early summer after the previous harvest, when the Château of Bordeaux releases their wines as futures, is one of the key events of the season. Latour, however, no longer takes part. The 2012 vintage was the last vintage of Latour released as a future, and since then, all releases have been from physical stocks in Latour’s cellars.

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 100

The 2010 Latour is deep garnet in color, anda WOWa it erupts from the glass with powerful creme de cassis, Black Forest cake and blackberry pie scents plus intense sparks of dried roses, cigar boxes, fragrant earth and smoked meats with aniseed and crushed rocks wafts. Full-bodied, concentrated and oh-so-decadent in the mouth, it has a firm, grainy texture and lovely freshness carrying the rich, opulent fruit to an epically long finish. It is incredibly tempting to drink now, but I suspect this hedonic experience isn’t a scratch on the mind-blowing, otherworldly secrets this time capsule will have to reveal given another 7-10 years in bottle and continuing over the following fifty years++. JancisRobinson.com 18.5++

Tasted blind. Deepest garnet. Opaque core. Minty cassis and lots of sweetness. Powerful, dense, compact. Nowhere near ready. Massive power and yet it is balancing the fruit and the structure. Closed. Keep away. (JH) [12/02/2020]

Vinous 96+

Dark ruby-red. Brooding nose hints at plum, cassis, brown spices and cedary oak. Sweet, fresh and highly concentrated, with brisk, intense cabernet sauvignon-dominated flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar and cocoa powder. Vibrant acidity gives this wine terrific lift and energy, but it’s currently hard as nails. Finishes impressively long, with noble tannins and palate-staining concentration; nutmeg and licorice nuances emerge slowly with aeration. A knockout, but forget about it in your cellar for another 15 years. While I think the 2009 Latour has a magic spicy charm, the 2010 is more in keeping with this great estate’s DNA.
