Chateau Lynch Bages: A Flying Fifth

Chateau Lynch Bages is one of Bordeaux’s most popular wines for very good reason, it’s excellent in quality and great value for a wine of its pedigree. A so-called ‘Flying Fifth’ due to its ability to punch well above its Fifth Growth Classification, Lynch Bages is a statuesque, structured and consistently excellent Pauillac.

The Grand Vin is the star of the show, while the second wine, Echo de Lynch, gives a good insight into the house style at a very reasonable price. A small amount of white is also made and has achieved something of a cult following.

Quintessential Pauillac:

Lynch Bages is classic Pauillac in style and substance, meaning that it is muscular, powerful, concentrated and immensely age-worthy. It sits on a terroir of deep gravel over limestone. This is perfect for the Cabernet Sauvignon that typically makes up around 70% of the blend. Merlot makes up around 20%, with the remainder Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. On the nose, look for cassis, cigar box and dark fruits. The palate is defined by powerful tannins, plenty of lively acidity and dark berry and blackcurrant.

With ten or even twenty years of bottle age, the tannins relax, resulting in a complex and incredibly satisfying Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 95

The 2010 Lynch-Bages has a tightly wound nose: introverted black fruit, cedar and mint. Touches of iris flower and pencil box both emerge with aeration. These aromatics say: "Come back later." The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity and firm grip. It feels linear towards the finish but is fresh with an attractive underlying marine note that enlivens and lends complexity to the finish. This is outstanding, but it is only for those with patience. Tasted at the Lynch-Bages vertical at the chateau. [Neal Martin, 18/07/2023]

Anticipated maturity: 2021-2029

Wine Advocate 97

Still a saturated ruby-black in hue, the 2010 Lynch-Bages offers up aromas of rich cassis fruit mingled with hints of pencil shavings, loamy soil and cigar wrapper. Full-bodied, deep and muscular, it’s rich and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit that’s framed by firm, powdery tannins and lively acids. The most brooding, backward Lynch-Bages of the decade and one of the real successes of the vintage, this is a vibrant, tightly wound wine that is still an infant at age 10. Readers with bottles in their cellars might try one now out of curiosity, but this 2010 won’t begin to hit its stride until age 20. [William Kelley, 24/10/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2027-2067

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

Still very dark in colour. Rich, candied fruit – very much a warm-vintage nose. There’s lots of oak too, and a dark, leathery complexity to finish. Only just opening up – but the tannins are soft and ready now. Great persistence. With such opulence, I could see this appealing to fans of Napa Cabernet. (RH) [15/04/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040

Vinous 92+

Bright ruby-red. Classic Pauillac aromas and flavors of cassis, black cherry, menthol, minerals and licorice lifted by a violet topnote. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, with terrific fruit intensity to support its very bright acidity. This firmly structured, gripping wine is a bit dominated by its serious tannic spine today, but the dark berry fruit gained dramatically in creaminess with some time in the glass. Potentially one of the best vintages for this large property in many years. [Stephen Tanzer, 07/01/2013]
