Chateau Montrose – Monumental Bordeaux:
The St Estephe Second Growth Estate of Chateau Montrose is a phenomenal wine currently on a tremendous run of form.
This Bordeaux estate can trace its history back to the 18th century and was included in the 1855 Bordeaux classifications. Interestingly, the estate gets its name not from a person, but from the pink heather that once grew on this hill. The French words “mont rose” translating to “pink mountain”.
The Grand Vin is monumental, highly collectable and immensely age-worthy. For those looking for a window into the house style in a more easy-drinking and approachable style, the second wine, La Dame de Montrose, is a superb option. In the best vintages, it can rival many classed growths in quality.
Classically-Structured, Brooding & Age-Worthy:
Montrose is located in St Estephe, the most northern of the communes of the Medoc. The soils are deep gravel and sand with a subsoil of clay and marl. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend at around 65%, with Merlot around 25% and the balance Merlot.
Thanks to its terroir, Chateau Montrose is typically a brooding, muscular and imposing wine. Powerful and structured tannins and densely concentrated fruit mean that it can be impenetrable and closed when young. However, a decade or two of bottle age works wonders with Montrose. Time reveals a wine of classicism, complexity and nuance.
Like many estates in Bordeaux, serious inward investment in recent years has paid huge dividends. The estate is now crafting some of the most consistently excellent wines in its history. New vintages are often highly oversubscribed on release.

The 2010 Montrose is insanely beautiful. A vivid, eternal wine, the 2010 dazzles right out of the gate with its explosive energy. Soaring floral and mineral notes are immediately captivating on the bouquet. All that carries through to the palate, where the wine is dense and expansive. Readers lucky enough to own it should be thrilled. This really benefits from aeration. What a wine!

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Montrose opens with classic notions of warm blackcurrants, plum preserves, cedar chest and pencil shavings plus touches of menthol and underbrush. Full-bodied, concentrated and built like a brick house in the mouth, the densely packed, muscular black fruit is superbly supported by firm, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with great length and depth.

Tasted blind. Deep smudgy garnet. Fresh, lightly herbaceous with attractive cassis-leaf aroma. Refined, dry elegant texture. Finesse in the texture and yet still pretty youthful. (JH)

Bright, deep ruby-red. Superripe, deep aromas of black raspberry, cassis, plum, minerals, licorice and bitter chocolate. Densely packed, elegant and classically dry, with creamy depth of dark fruit and mineral flavors given definition and cut by terrific vinosity. This compellingly pure, extract-rich wine showed increasing energy as it opened in the glass. Finishes with big, dusty tannins and outstanding length and perfume. A great vintage for Montrose, in a modern style. Following the first couple vintages made under the direction of Jean Delmas, the ’09 and ’10 have shown considerably more stuffing. I would not be at all surprised if my score proved to be overly conservative.
