Kongsgaard: “Artisanal wines at their finest” – Robert Parker

California’s Kongsgaard is one of the Napa Valley’s most exciting and interesting wineries. The winery was founded in 1996 and quickly achieved cult status thanks to the world-class nature of the wines made here.

The wines, both red and white, are made in a non-interventionist style by the brilliant John and Maggie Kongsgaard, and now their son Alex. All are tremendous in quality, with a style well summed up by Robert Parker, who called them “reds and whites that represent the essence of their varietal, vintage and vineyard”.

Cult-Collectable Napa Reds and Whites

Kongsgaard is perhaps most famous for its white wines. The Kongsgaard Chardonnay is a benchmark for California and often an instant sell-out on release. Consequently, there is never much available on the market to buy. The Judge Chardonnay is the jewel in the crown when it comes to the whites. It comes from a small vineyard, and just a couple of hundred cases are made in a typical vintage. These cases are some of the Napa Valley’s most sought-after.

The Kongsgaard reds are also outstanding. Kongsgaard Syrah is the flagship red and comes from a tiny 2-acre plot. This translates to just a few hundred cases of a Syrah that can rival the very best made anywhere in the world.

Also worth looking out for is the Kongsgaard Cabernet Sauvignon. This comes from the Eastern side of the Valley from a plot at 2,300 feet. Very ‘old world’ in style, it is classically structured and very age-worthy.

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 95

The 2010 Chardonnay The Judge is rich, explosive and unctuous, with a stunning interplay of deep, resonant fruit and imposing structure. A wine of pure verticality, the 2010 stands out for its power, length and drive. The 2010 remains incredibly young, but it is fabulous. The textured, creamy finish is hugely appealing. [Antonio Galloni, 11/01/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018

Vinous 96+

Brilliant medium yellow, the palest of these four chardonnays. Reticent, Burgundian nose hints at peach, citrus fruits, hazelnut and gunpowder complicated by mineral and sulfide nuances. Extremely deep and concentrated but youthfully closed, showing a powerful crushed stone character that reminded me of a Corton-Charlemagne. With its strong minerality, this very Burgundian chardonnay comes across as drier than the Napa Valley bottling. Already shows outstanding palate presence, but really calls for three to five years of aging. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2013]

Wine Advocate 96

The 2010 Chardonnay The Judge is rich, ripe and seamless, but also supported by plenty of vintage 2010 minerality. Lemon, pastry, spices and intense crushed rocks are all woven together beautifully in a focused, taut Chardonnay loaded with class and personality. Saline notes come to life on the layered, nuanced finish. A high presence of shot berries reduced yields to just one ton per acre. Most of the fruit was old Stony Hill Wente. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. These wines from John Kongsgaard were among the highlights from the month I spent in Napa Valley this year. The overall quality level here is absolutely remarkable. It is rare to see someone who is so brilliant with so many grape varieties, but Kongsgaard seems to have the magic touch. The Chardonnays remain among the most exquisite in California. Kongsgaard favors longer elevage for his Chardonnays and is generally willing to take greater risks than most of his colleagues. No guts, no glory, as the saying goes. Well, there is plenty of glory here. Fax (707) 226-2936 [Antonio Galloni, 27/12/2012]
