Jacques-Frederic Mugnier: Icon Burgundy

JF Mugnier is one of Burgundy’s superstar domaines. Famed for its Musigny, but with a Bonnes Mares and Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses that are also sensational, this is red Burgundy of the very top tier.

The Famous Mugnier Musigny

Musigny is a benchmark vineyard. For Clive Coates, it’s “one of the very greatest climats in the whole of the Côte d’Or” and “can be quite simply the most delicious wine to be found in Burgundy… heaven in a glass.” Jasper Morris concurs, calling it “one of Burgundy’s outstanding Crown Jewels”, and he places it above even Chambertin on the qualitative tree. It has a mythical aura, as do the wines that come from here… none more so than that of Mugnier.

Mugnier’s Musigny is one of Grand Cru Burgundy’s ultimate trophies and, for Coates, “A wine at the summit of what Burgundy can produce”. Supply is minuscule, and since those with it are seldom inclined to let theirs go, it appears for sale fleetingly and only in tiny amounts.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Vinous 94

Bright medium red. Briary crushed raspberry, white pepper and peony on the nose, accented by a piquant note of blood orange. Juicy, precise and penetrating, with lovely cut to the red fruit and spice flavors. Little greenness or earthiness showing. Finishes spicy, brisk, firm and very long. A great showing today; I might have picked this blind as the Amoureuses! [Stephen Tanzer, 03/01/2014]

Antonio Galloni 94

The 2011 Bonnes-Mares is simply magnificent. Light on its feet and graceful, as it so often is, the 2011 graces the palate with simply extraordinary finesse. Dark cherries, plums, graphite, cloves and menthol continue to blossom as the wine opens up in the glass. [Antonio Galloni, 11/01/2013]

Anticipated maturity: 2021-2036

JancisRobinson.com 18.0

In middle of the vineyard. Terres rouges and blanches. Small parcel so assembled from the start. Fred thinks that inside each climat the magic is to have big diversity which makes the wine complex, rich and well balanced. Separating the soils seems erroneous to him. A more fragrant, feminine style of Bonnes Mares than say Roumier’s. Transparent and aerienne. Very distinctive! Pretty. But not solid. Very racy. Very refined. Very Chambolle. [28/11/2012]

Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032
