Chateau Latour: An Iconic Bordeaux First Growth

Towering, imposing and immense, Chateau Latour is a true connoisseur’s First Growth. From a prime plot in Pauillac, the Grand Vin from here is among Bordeaux’s and, indeed the world’s best and is rightly revered. The second wine, Les Forts de Latour, is also magical, a match for many classed growths in quality.

Chateau Latour: A Unique Terroir & Intoxicating Style

Chateau Latour is blessed with one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. Planted with a classic Left Bank blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it has a near-perfect aspect stretching down to the Gironde.

The soils here are characterised by having a much higher percentage of clay (the same type as found at Chateau Petrus in Pomerol) under the covering of gravel than Lafite, for example. This terroir translates to a rich, intense, powerful and intoxicating style.

This magnificent vineyard is allied to some of the most meticulous, precise and outright impressive winemaking on the planet, which means a wine against which all are measured.

The Withdrawal From En Primeur

The En Primeur season, which occurs in the spring and early summer after the previous harvest, when the Château of Bordeaux releases their wines as futures, is one of the key events of the season. Latour, however, no longer takes part. The 2012 vintage was the last vintage of Latour released as a future, and since then, all releases have been from physical stocks in Latour’s cellars.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 2012 Latour wine of the vintage? It has to be a serious contender. In this blind taste-off between the five First Growths, its quality shines through. With exceptional delineation on the nose, it just oozes class with precise black fruit, crushed stone, mint and light sous-bois. The palate is perfectly balanced with a fine line of acidity, as precise as a Swiss watch, gently building to a finish that delivers the structure one expects from a Latour. Sheer class. Tasted blind in Bordeaux. [Neal Martin, 26/01/2023]

JancisRobinson.com 17.5++

The first vintage of Latour to be released many years after the en primeur campaign. Quite reticent on the nose. A bit pinched and tough still. Minerally and stony. Go for Les Forts for current drinking. [03/03/2022]

Wine Advocate 96

The 2012 Latour is a blend of 90.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.6% Merlot and 0.2% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet colored, the nose slowly, measuredly emerges with notions of preserved Morello cherries, baked blackcurrants and blackberry compote, giving way to nuances of pencil shavings, unsmoked cigars, Chinese five spice and sandalwood plus ever so subtle hints of cardamom and eucalyptus. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black and red fruit preserves with a firm, grainy-textured frame and fantastic freshness, finishing with a veritable firework display of lingering spices and minerals. This is a more restrained, relatively elegant vintage of Latour that may not have that a oeiron fist in a velvet glovea power of the greatest vintages but nonetheless struts its superior terroir and behind-the-scenes savoir faire with impressive panache. It is drinking nicely now with suitably rounded-off, approachable tannins, and the tertiary characters are just beginning to bring some more cerebral elements into the compote of temptingly primary black fruits. But, if you’re looking to drink it in full, flamboyant swing, give it another 5-10 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20-25 years+. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 21/02/2020]

Vinous 91-94

(90% cabernet sauvignon, and 10% merlot; 73 IPT; 12.8% alcohol; 36% of the total crop): Dark ruby. Perfumed nose of blackcurrant, violet, ink and flint. Bright acids and very smooth tannins nicely frame and support the blackcurrant and cedar flavors. Finishes long and suave, with a lingering graphite note. This sample actually contained 0.2% petit verdot. I didn’t find any of the green notes that plague many Left Bank wines in this vintage. [Ian D’Agata, 05/01/2013]
