Domaine Comtes Lafon: A Meursault Icon

Based in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Comtes Lafon is widely considered one of the definitive benchmarks for world-class white Burgundy. The modern era of this historic Meursault estate was shaped by the legendary Dominique Lafon, who took over in 1984 and famously reclaimed all of the family’s leased vineyards to bring production entirely in-house. He also pioneered the estate’s transition to organic farming in 1995 and full biodynamic viticulture by 1998. Today, the 16.3-hectare domain is capably led by the next generation, Léa and Pierre Lafon, who maintain this uncompromising commitment to soil health and biodiversity across an enviable collection of parcels in Meursault, Volnay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Monthélie.

Comtes Lafon’s Style of Textural Opulence and High Tension

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Comtes Lafon yields Chardonnays of remarkable complexity, celebrated for balancing a classic, dramatic mid-palate richness with a driving, mineral-edged acidity. Under the family’s guidance, the grapes are pressed slowly and fermented using native yeasts. A defining element of the estate’s cellar technique is its unusually cold, deep cellars, which slow down the malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing process. New French oak is used judiciously, rarely exceeding 30% for the top premier crus, and the wines are aged on their fine lees for up to two years without stirring (bâtonnage). This patient approach ensures that the natural opulence of the fruit is perfectly counterbalanced by vertical structure, intense site specificity, and a chiselled, saline finish.

Institutional Quality Across Historic Premier and Grand Crus

The global demand and blue-chip quality associated with Domaine Comtes Lafon are anchored by an extraordinary portfolio of old-vine climats. The estate holds unparalleled parcels across Meursault’s most revered premier crus, including Les Charmes, Les Perrières, and a significant monopole in Clos de la Barre, alongside a prized holding in the legendary Grand Cru Le Montrachet. The domain also produces exceptional, structurally refined Pinot Noirs from premier crus in Volnay, such as Clos des Chênes and Santenots-du-Milieu. By rigorously controlling yields and focusing on absolute phenolic maturity, the Lafon family delivers magnificent consistency across varying vintages. These highly allocated wines possess phenomenal cellaring potential, built to evolve seamlessly in collectors’ cellars for decades.

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 98

"Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine des Comtes Lafon has a clean and fresh bouquet, perhaps just a bit too much lime for my liking, although there is mineralite tucked in just behind. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry with a superb line of acidity. There is weight and presence to this Montrachet, and it gains weight and delivers a knockout, extremely persistent finish tinged with lemon thyme and sherbet. Though a little disjointed at present, I suspect this will turn into a wonderful Montrachet with style and class. But be warned that it will require several years in bottle." Vinous 94-96

(still in tank): Distinctly wild aromas of pineapple, iodine, resiny oak and caraway seed lifted by a floral topnote. Then brooding and a bit lower-toned on the palate than the Perrieres but with a texture of liquid velvet to its plush, soil-driven flavors of ripe stone fruits and smoky minerality. This youthfully musky, extremely backward wine does not currently display the sheer verve of Lafon’s supernal Meursault Perrieres but it boasts outstanding sweetness for the year and a wonderfully tactile, building, palate-dusting finish. This wine will need extended cellaring. [Stephen Tanzer, 09/01/2016]

Rich and broad on the nose – obviously Montrachet. Great weight and savour. Real edge of excitement and density with explosive green fireworks round the edges. Should take on even more weight and excitement. Long. [12/11/2015]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2034
