Taittinger: The Most Elegant Of Champagnes

Bollinger is noted for its power and weight, and Pol Roger for its impeccable balance. Taittinger is a Champagne that is peerless in its sheer elegance.

This finesse and poise come from the high quality of the Chardonnay grapes to which the house has access and the high proportion of them in the blend. Taittinger is known for its high proportion of Chardonnay grapes, which give its wines a delicate and elegant style.

Comtes de Champagne: The Flagship Of The House

The luxury cuvee of Taittinger is the Comtes de Champagne. It is the epitome of the house style. A 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc based on a single Champagne vintage, it is one of the very finest wines of this illustrious region.

Comtes de Champagne is made from Chardonnay grown in the top grands crus vineyards of the Côte des Blancs. These include Avize, Chouilly, Cramant and Mesnil. The grapes are carefully selected and hand-picked, and only the first pressing is used. This ensures the highest quality and purity. The wine is then aged for at least 10 years in the 4th-century Roman cellars of the former Saint-Nicaise abbey in Reims, where it develops layered complexity to balance the dazzling acidity and purity of fruit.

Comtes de Champagne also has a reputation for great value, considering the quality in the bottle. As Galloni wrote in 2015 after tasting the 2006 vintage, “Comtes de Champagne remains the single best value (in relative terms) in tête de cuvée Champagne”. This makes it a true connoisseur’s choice.

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 96

The 2014 Comtes de Champagne is a fine follow-up to the 2013. It shows the more linear personality of the year, with plenty of energy driving its overall feel. The fruit profile is on the riper side, but the wine has a decidedly lithe build that is quite attractive. Hints of yellow orchard fruit, chamomile, dried flowers and crushed rocks linger. This bottle was disgorged in July 2023, ahead of the commercial release. The 2014 is hugely promising at this early stage. [Antonio Galloni, 26/03/2024]
