Chateau Rauzan-Segla: A Resurgent Margaux Second Growth

The Margaux Second Growth estate of Chateau Rauzan-Segla sits on one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. After a couple of decades in the wilderness, the property has been resurgent in recent years and is now one of the region’s most exciting and popular wines. It is also terrific value for the quality and pedigree in the bottle.

Like sister St Emilion winery Chateau Canon Rauzan-Segla, the estate is owned by the Wertheimer family, the owners of the Chanel fashion house. They invested heavily in the property and hired John Kolasa, the former manager of Chateau Latour, as the director. They also hired Nicolas Audebert, a former winemaker at Cheval des Andes in Argentina, as the technical director. The inward investment has paid huge dividends and fully unlocked the potential of the property.

The Grand Vin is excellent, while the second wine, Segla, which is usually released when physical rather than en primeur, is superb value and ages beautifully.

Rauzan-Segla: Opulence and Finesse

The vineyard of Chateau Rauzan Segla covers 66 hectares of Margaux and is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3.5% Petit Verdot, and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. The soil is composed of gravel, sand, and clay, and provides good drainage and heat retention. Care and attention to detail are meticulous, with all grapes hand-harvested and carefully sorted.

Classically aromatic on the nose, Chateau Rauzan-Segla tends to be on the more opulent side of the Margaux spectrum. However, there is always plenty of finesse to balance. With a little bottle age, it is an immensely satisfying and complete Bordeaux.
