Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 94

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a beautiful, well-defined, complex bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry, pain d epices and minerals, mercurial in the glass and changing with virtually every swirl. The palate is sleek and smooth. There is obviously some seductive new oak at play here, but it is simpatico with the fruit and dovetails seamlessly toward the velvety long finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. [Neal Martin, 13/11/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050

vinum 89

Darker colour and fruit profile with marked oak aromas. Bassy and rich, with spice and deep-pitched berry tones. All up front but then falls a bit flat. There is acid and some snap but not enough true complexity or detail. [Matthew Hemming, 01/09/2018]

Vinous 95

(25 hectoliters per hectare): Full, dark red. Tight, primary, slightly reduced aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Densely packed, rich and broad; a distinctly horizontal, pliant style of Clos Vougeot, no doubt a function of the very warm, sunny vintage. Today this is sweeter and more open-knit than the Grands-Echezeaux but both of these wines should easily age for two decades or more. (Mallard noted that on some days this wine comes across as stricter, "more Cistercian.") Finishes with spicy, ripe tannins and terrific energy and length. [Stephen Tanzer, 01/01/2018]

Wine Advocate 93

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet with dark cherry fruit, blackcurrant and briary tinged with fine mineralite – hints of cold stone percolating through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannin, good depth of fruit and crucially a keen line of acidity that maintains the tension. There is a subtle spicy, almost white pepper element to this Clos Vougeot that becomes more accentuated as it gently fans out on the finish. This is a very impressive Clos de Vougeot. [Neal Martin, 28/09/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2038

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

Cask sample 1: 50% whole bunch and 80% new oak. Pretty dark crimson. Intriguing savoury nose. Very juicy on the palate and well etched. A little dry on the end. Good life – real energy on the finish, which is still a bit dry thanks to the whole-bunch component. Cask sample 2: identical except the berries were cut off the bunches by hand ciseaux . 50% whole bunch. Like the wine above except less dry on the end – definitely a more attractive texture. And rather more confident and bold. [09/11/2016]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2045
