Tasting Notes

Vinous 96

Impressively deep saturated red. Brooding aromas of black cherry, dark berries, licorice, minerals, rose petal and violet. Hugely rich, chewy wine with compelling sweetness and mineral verve to its flavors of black cherry, licorice and dark chocolate; totally mouthfilling without coming across as heavy, with its incipient soil tones currently masked by totally ripe fruit. A monster of a Burgundy with the thickness and sheer extract to nicely carry its huge, sweet tannins, which saturate the front teeth and sides of the tongue. The finish builds inexorably. Fun to taste now but it would be a crime to drink this wine anytime soon. In fact, it shut down hard in the glass. From fruit picked during the first week of September, as in 2011 and 2007. (13.5% alcohol; 3.42 pH; 3.5 grams per liter acidity; 30.5 hectoliters per hectare produced) [Stephen Tanzer, 21/03/2019]

Neal Martin 90

The 2015 Corton Clos des Cortons Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet of black cherries mixed with raspberry and iodine, making it one of the most backward Cortons on the nose at this stage. The palate is structured and masculine and a little austere at the moment, but in a positive sense. This is keeping to itself at the moment – a Corton designed for long-term aging. My concern is the wood tannins on the finish that usurp the fruit and leave a bitter residue in the mouth. Perhaps it is just a phase. I leave a question mark against my score, as this could go either way. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. [Neal Martin, 13/11/2018]

Wine Advocate 93+

"The 2015 Corton Clos des Cortons is still very youthful on the nose, opening in the glass with notes of cherry and raspberry, nuances of roast squab and spice emerging with aeration. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with a lavish attack, ripe in profile but showing good acids and nice depth at the core. This Clos des Cortons has already digested all its new wood, and the raw materials are very impressive: the only missing ingredient is time." [William Kelley, 27/04/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2045

Cask sample. Monopole. Mid to deep crimson. So perfumed you might even say there was a lightly floral quality to the red fruit. Compact and yet scented on the palate too. Surprisingly approachable but the tannins close in on the finish. (JH) [10/01/2017]
