Chateau Calon Segur – A Classic St Estephe
Chateau Calon Segur is a Bordeaux 3rd Growth estate based in St Estephe. It is much loved by connoisseurs for its consistent quality, longevity and excellent value.
The name Calon Segur means “heart of Segur”. It is referenced by the heart-shaped emblem found on the label and the chateau. This heart is a symbol of the affection held by owner Nicolas-Alexandre, marquis de Segur, for the property. He inherited the estate in the 18th century, and although he also owned the mighty First Growths of Chateau Latour and Chateau Lafite, he famously said that “I make wine at Lafitte and Latour but my heart is at Calon Segur.
The Grand Vin is highly sought after on release each year. Also worth considering is the increasingly impressive second wine, Marquis de Calon.
Structured, complex and age-worthy
The vineyard covers 55 hectares and sits on a fantastic combination of gravel over a deep clay subsoil. It is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot.
In style, Chateau Calon Segur is classic St Estephe. The Grand Vin is a structured and age-worthy claret. On the nose there are typically notes of cassis, black fruit, cedar and tobacco. On the palate, expect more dark fruits framed by firm and powerful yet plush and high-quality tannins. It is these tannins that give Calon Segur its remarkable ability to age.
