Chateau Lafite-Rothschild: An Iconic Bordeaux First Growth.
The word icon is frequently used when it comes to fine wine, with Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, it is fully justified. As perhaps the most famous and desirable of the famous Left-Bank First Growths, Pauillac’s Lafite is a byword for excellence and both the Grand Vin and second wine, the Carraudes de Lafite, are two of the key wines in any en primeur campaign. A historic estate still at the top of its game, there is nothing quite like Lafite.
Chateau Lafite-Rothschild: The style of one of the world’s great wines.
The blend in Lafite-Rothschild’s vineyard is classic Left-Bank Bordeaux, with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Franc planted and usually 80-90% Cabernet Sauvignon in the Grand Vin. These vines sit on very deep gravel and cope beautifully with any vagaries in the weather and produce grapes of stunning quality. The finished wine is characterised by incredible aromatics, a sophisticated palate and immense ageing potential delivered with an air of quiet confidence.
Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton-Rothschild, what’s the connection?
Surprisingly enough, there really isn’t one. Despite both sharing the same name and being close in Pauillac, these are by no means sister wineries, with each owned by different and distinct branches of the Rothschild family. The styles of the wine are also very different, with Lafite, classic, stately and almost reserved, while Mouton is famed for its opulence and flamboyance.

The 2016 Lafite-Rothschild has a straight-down-the-line classic Pauillac bouquet with ebullient black fruit, graphite and sous-bois scents, the most classical of the First Growths. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Lovely balance, gentle grip, perhaps not quite as complex on the finish as Latour, holding something back for now. Classical restraint. Tasted at the 10-Year-On tasting at Bordeaux Index.

Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. Pretty broad and full-on in its appeal. Sweet and seductive with a medicinal note. Some heat on the end. The finish is not quite as complete as some of its peers. Slight char. (JR)

The 2016 Lafite-Rothschild is a total stunner. Seamless, racy and voluptuous in the glass, the 2016 is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Once again, I am blown away by the inner sweetness and purity of the fruit. The 2016 is, rich, concentrated and yet also light on its feet, in the way only Lafite can be. Dramatic and ample the 2016 Lafite is a beautifully resonant, super-expressive wine endowed with regal beauty and tremendous overall balance. It will drink well for many years and decades.

The 2016 Lafite Rothschild is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, with 15% of the press wine contributing to the blend this year. Deep purple-black in color, it slowly reveals the most gorgeous perfume of kirsch, lilacs, black raspberries and warm blackcurrants with underlying nuances of cigar box, rose hip tea, cloves, licorice and pencil lead plus a waft of garrigue. Medium-bodied and built like a brick house with a firm yet beautifully ripe, finely pixelated tannic backbone and seamless freshness supporting the amazing intensity of black fruits and floral layers, it finishes very long and provocatively perfumed.
