Chateau Pichon Lalande – A Superb Super Second

The Pauillac Second Growth of Chateau Pichon Lalande (or Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande to give it its full name) is one of Bordeaux’s most revered properties.

Pichon Lalande is a beautiful Chateau located in one of Pauillac’s best locations. The building itself is stunning, think of what you’d expect the perfect Bordeaux chateaux to look like, and it’s this. The place and the wines all scream quality.

Some incredible wines have been made here over the years. The 1982, for example, is one of the finest reds from Bordeaux’s most famous vintage. In recent years, Pichon Lalande has undergone something of a renaissance, and it is now consistently outstanding. It has become one of the key En Primeur purchases in any given campaign.

The Grand Vin makes up around 50% of production, with the remainder going into the excellent second wine, Pichon Comtesse Reserve.

Class, Grace, Poise & Sophistication

Chateau Pichon Lalande is superbly located overlooking the Gironde River. It is in a sweet spot of Pauillac. To give an idea of just how well situated it is, parts of the vineyard touch those of the mighty First Growth of Chateau Latour.

The vineyard covers 90 hectares and is planted with 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It sits on classic Pauillac gravels over iron-rich clay, which helps it cope well with the increasingly hot summers in Bordeaux.

In style, it is utterly captivating. The epitome of grace, sophistication, and poise. It is “just a stunning wine, easily one of my favourite estates in Bordeaux” for Jane Anson. For her, it has “a grace and vibrancy that delivers personality and signature year after year”.  This is not a burly and imposing Pauillac. Pichon Laladne is effortlessly chic, just oozing refinement, class and panache.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has a gorgeous bouquet with black cherries, violet, cassis and light crushed stony scents. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with immense depth and grip. Powerful, almost burly tannins find counterbalance in a keen line of acidity. The finish is structured, more so than I expected in its infancy, but it still feels elegant and very persistent. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Tasted blind. Lifted, buttery nose. Intriguing and very seductive. Quite a bit of alcohol but a wine to swoon over. (JR) [12/02/2026]

Dark-toned, intense and oaky. Has a sweet, toastiness that’s almost lacquered. Good fruit but the wood is a little distracting. Batailley? [Matthew Hemming, 01/02/2026]

Antonio Galloni 100

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is every bit as regal as it has always been. Towering and spectacularly rich in the glass, the 2016 captures every ounce of potential is showed from barrel. The 2016 is a vivid, dramatically sweeping wine that will leave readers week at the knees. Beams of tannin give the 2016 soaring intensity that is matched by a host of aromas and flavors that open up in the glass. Blackberry jam, graphite, spice, menthol, licorice, pencil shavings and spice are all finely sketched in a bold, savory Pauillac that hits all the right notes. The 2016 Pichon Comtesse has been riveting on each of the four occasions I have tasted it from barrel thus far, making it easily one of the wines of the vintage. Nicolas Glumineu and his team turned out an epic Pichon Comtesse in 2016. Don’t miss it! [Antonio Galloni, 18/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2066

Wine Advocate 98+

The 2016 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is blended of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc aged for 18 months in 60% new oak. Deep purple-black in color, it is a little mute, slowly unfurling to reveal a core of crushed blackcurrants, blueberry compote and black raspberries with nuances of cinnamon stick, violets, star anise, menthol and pencil shavings plus a waft of fallen leaves. Medium-bodied and super intense in the mouth, the palate bursts with black fruits and savory layers, complemented by red fruit sparks and framed by fantastically ripe, fine-grained tannins, finishing very long with a lingering suggestion of minerality. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 30/11/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2058
