Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte: One Of Pessac’s Top Producers

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte of Pessac-Leognan is a Bordeaux producer on a terrific run of form. The estate has moved up through the gears in recent years, and the result has been a sensational series of wines popular with critics and consumers alike.

The Smith Haut Lafitte estate was bought by Daniel and Florence Cathiard in 1990, and their impact cannot be overestimated. Significant inward investment transformed the winery and meant ever more impressive wines. They also had the vision to embrace the benefits of wine tourism, opening a wine-themed hotel and spa.

Like many other chateaux in Pessac, Smith Haut Lafitte is almost as famous for its brilliant white wine as its red. The Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a superb wine, made in relatively small quantities and is well worth the effort to track down.

Also look out for the excellent second wines of the estate, Petit Haut Lafitte Rouge and Blanc. Both are excellent and terrific value.

A Benchmark White and Ever More Elegant Red

The estate is made up of around 78 hectares of vineyards. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (9%), and Petit Verdot (1%) for the reds. For the whites, there is Sauvignon Blanc (90%), Semillon (5%), and Sauvignon Gris (5%). Soils are composed of gravel, sand, and clay. This gives Smith Haut Lafitte elegance, minerality and complexity.

In style, minerality and elegance are the watchwords. The white is a benchmark example of Bordeaux Blanc and is full of energy and complexity, and ages magnificently if given the chance. The red has gained ever more finesse in recent years. There is plenty of structure and finely tuned acidity, balanced by generous fruit, polished tannins, and an extremely enjoyable, sumptuous mouthfeel. All of this sits within a classic structure that ensures excellent ageing potential.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 2016 Smith Haut Lafitte has a very succinct and refined bouquet, with pure blackberry, bilberry, pressed flowers and undergrowth scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied, with svelte tannins, exquisite balance and an edgy, precise minerally finish. The class of this Pessac-Leognan shines through. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. [Neal Martin, 21/04/2026]

Tasted blind. Vibrant crimson. Intense, well-balanced nose. And a little charry on the finish after the freshness of the appellation. Both sweet and savoury! Long. (JR) [12/02/2026]

Lots of oak and winemaking gloss. Very toasty but also with a nicely spicy perfume. Creamy texture but this is distinguished by having the fruit in the middle to support all the theatrics. [Matthew Hemming, 01/02/2026]

Antonio Galloni 98

The 2016 Smith Haut Lafitte is flat out stunning. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2016 possesses tremendous energy and tension to play off the wine’s dark, rich fruit. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Smith Haut Lafitte with such extraordinary balance. In 2016, the Grand Vin is tense and pulsing with energy. Hints of lavender, spice, menthol and creme de cassis open up in the glass, but the 2016 stands out for its feel and exceptional harmony. The combined effects of picking a bit early, vinifiying more gently and reducing the impact of oak are having a profound effect at Smith Haut Lafitte. Thinking of some of the highly regarded wines of the last decade here, the 2009 and 2010 in particular, well, the 2016 is on another level. This is magnificent showing from proprietors Florence and Daniel Cathiard, and their team led by Technical Director Fabien Teitgen. [Antonio Galloni, 18/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2046

Wine Advocate 98

Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot and matured in 60% new oak for 18 months, the 2016 Smith Haut Lafitte has a very deep garnet-purple color, opening with sensuous scents of warm black cherries, blackberry pie, star anise and fragrant lilacs with hints of chocolate box, cigar box and pencil lead plus wafts of truffles and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, rich and seductive, it completely fills the palate with perfumed black berry preserves and superbly plush tannins, finishing epically long and beautifully layered. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2046
