Producer Profile

Domaine de Chevalier, “In my top ten favourite estates”, Jane Anson

Domaine de Chevalier is one of Pessac-Leognan’s most exciting producers. Crafting both red and white Bordeaux wines of immense quality and charm, which are also exceptional value, it has an army of loyal supporters.

As Jane Anson writes, it is “one of the best-loved and most consistently impressive estates in Bordeaux. I would also suggest that it is one of the best value.” Indeed, it’s so good that she asserts, “I would put it in my top ten favourite estates.”

The red wine is a superb wine, while the much rarer white (around 1,000 cases per year) is a benchmark for Bordeaux Blanc. The second wines, Esprit de Chevalier Rouge and Blanc, are also terrific.

Elegance, Poise & Pure Class

Domaine de Chevalier sits on a spectacular terroir. It is a single plot seemingly carved out of the forest that surrounds it. This location gives Domaine de Chevalier a unique microclimate with big day-to-night temperature differences. A bit of extra warmth means an early bud break and, therefore, a long hang time for the grapes. This means complexity, nuance and longevity.

In style, the red is complex, layered and elegant, with excellent freshness and balance. It’s a very complete and well-rounded wine that always impresses for its poise and style. It very much punches above its price point. There’s an effortless here that is striking; nothing is forced or overdone. It’s pure class in a glass.

The white is a superstar. It is tensile and full of energy thanks to a trademark line of fine acidity. This acidity balances the power and structure that come through on the palate. It’s a white that ages magnificently.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier has a creamy, sensual bouquet that is very different from Les Carmes Haut-Brion, perhaps more sheen, well defined, with black plum and tobacco in the background. Like others, this coheres extremely well in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, with gentle grip, just the right sapidity and a precise, fresh and saline finish. Classy. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. [Neal Martin, 21/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2027-2052

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Very voluptuous – almost overripe! – nose. Then pretty tarry and drying on the end. But there is lots there for the future. (JR) [12/02/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2048

Lots of sweet berry fruit. Mouth-filling and juicy. The slightest suggestion of a bit of brett. [Matthew Hemming, 01/02/2026]

Antonio Galloni 97

The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a thrilling wine. Dense and beautifully layered, the 2016 is also quite a bit richer than it usually is. Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics and structure pulse through the wine. The red-toned fruit is incredibly primary at this stage. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2016 for at least a handful of years. It has been nothing short of magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. [Antonio Galloni, 18/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2066

Wine Advocate 94

The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot picked between 4-21 October at 45 hectoliters per hectare, and matured in 35% new oak. Oh yes! This is a perfumed bouquet that unfolds beautifully in the glass with blackberry, cedar, smoke and a light marine influence, not unlike Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with such fine tannins that it bought to mind Burgundy rather than Bordeaux. There is a grainy texture here, quite saline in the mouth with an entrancing sense of symmetry, very classic but not austere on the finish, with a long and saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Domaine de Chevalier from the busiest man in Bordeaux, Oliver Bernard. Tasted twice with consistent notes. [Neal Martin, 28/09/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2060
