Le Pin: Tiny Production, Ultra-Collectable Pomerol

Since its inception in 1979, Pomerol’s Le Pin has risen to become one of Bordeaux’s most exclusive, desirable and expensive wines. Named after a lone pine tree that sits outside the winery, it is minuscule in production at just 600 cases or so in a typical vintage and immense in quality. Allocations are some of the region’s most fiercely fought over and cherished.

Le Pin: Opulence, Decadence and Luxury

The unique terroir here at this tiny patch of Pomerol is responsible for Le Pin’s opulent and hedonistic style. The Grand Vin comes from a tiny, 2.8ha plot of Merlot that sits on deep gravel and iron-rich clay. Under the brilliant perfectionist owner Jacques Thienpont, who has a relentless and exacting drive for quality, the wines from here are consistently outstanding.

L’If and L’Hetre: Two Gems From The Same Superb Stable

While the price of Le Pin puts it out of the reach of many, there are options for those who want an insight into the winemaking here at a fraction of the price. Chateau L’If is a project of the Thienpont’s from St Emilion and is excellent. Chateau L’Hetre comes from vines in the Cotes de Bordeaux and is an outright bargain. Both are made by the same team and with the same level of care and expertise as the Grand Vin. They are well worth snapping up as they are relative bargains.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 96

The 2016 Le Pin has a sensual bouquet with red cherries, raspberry, violet and glycerine scents. Fine delineation, a little more hedonistic than its Pomerol peers. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, a silver thread of acidity, caressing and lush, with quite a bold and concentrated, primal finish. Seductive. Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year-On tasting in London. [Neal Martin, 21/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2029-2055

Tasted blind. Haunting liquorice nose. Round and flatteringly sweet. More forward than some of its peers. Lots of alcohol in evidence. (JR) [12/02/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2048

Antonio Galloni 99

The 2016 Le Pin is an extraordinarily beautiful vivid wine. Seamless, racy and voluptuous in the glass, the 2016 is a flat-out stunner. Nothing in particular stands out because all of the elements are in perfect balance. A wine of captivating, transcendental beauty, Le Pin has it all. Rose petal, red cherry, mint, blood orange and wild flowers all build in the glass, but it is the wine’s breathtaking finesse and elegance that stand out most. What a gorgeous, arrestingly beautiful wine this is. [Antonio Galloni, 18/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2051

Wine Advocate 98+

The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Le Pin is still very closed, revealing glimpses of preserved plums, blackberry pie and raspberry compote plus suggestions of potpourri, star anise, tobacco, fenugreek and stewed tea plus a waft of hoisin. The medium-bodied palate is opulent, rich and plush with layers of black and red fruit preserves and loads of exotic spice accents, finishing very long and very decadent. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 30/11/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2070
