Bruno Giacosa: A Langhe Legend

Based in Neive, Bruno Giacosa is universally recognised as one of the most foundational and historic forces in the history of Piedmontese winemaking. The late Bruno Giacosa, often referred to as the “Genius of Neive,” possessed an unparalleled, almost mystical knowledge of the Langhe’s finest vineyards, drawing on a family grape-buying legacy that began in the late 19th century. Decades before the concept of single-vineyard crus became standard in Italy, Giacosa was meticulously sourcing, vinifying, and bottling legendary individual plots from Barolo and Barbaresco under his own name.

Today, the estate’s towering legacy is capably preserved by his daughter, Bruna Giacosa, who maintains the domain’s uncompromising, old-school standards across their two distinct labels: the Casa Vinicola Bruno Giacosa (sourced from long-term growers) and the Azienda Agricola Falletto (estate-owned vines).

The Mythical Grandeur of the Giacosa Red Label Riserva

The absolute pinnacle of the portfolio, and an object of singular obsession for fine wine collectors globally, is the mythical Bruno Giacosa Red Label Riserva. Giacosa was notoriously uncompromising; if a vintage did not meet his exacting standards, he refused to bottle it at all, famously selling off entire productions in bulk. However, in truly exceptional years, the absolute finest barrels of Nebbiolo were selected to receive the iconic red label. Whether sourced from the estate’s crown-jewel Falletto vineyard in Serralunga or legendary historical crus like Santo Stefano in Barbaresco, the Red Label undergoes extended ageing in traditional, neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti). The resulting wine is a monumental masterpiece of structural density and aromatic weightlessness, showing a multi-layered complexity of tar, liquorice, dried rose petals, and truffles that demands decades of cellaring.

The Classic Austerity & Flawless Quality of Bruno Giacosa

The overarching style across all Bruno Giacosa wines is defined by an aristocratic austerity, pristine fruit purity, and incredible architectural symmetry. Operating firmly within the traditionalist camp, the estate completely rejects modern shortcuts or cosmetic oak enhancements, relying instead on long macerations and large, neutral wood casks to allow the intrinsic character of the Nebbiolo grape and the underlying soil to speak clearly. From their benchmark white Roero Arneis and classic Barbera d’Alba to the highly coveted single-vineyard Barolos and Barbarescos like Asili and Rabajà, the winemaking team maintains a laser-like focus on balance and structural longevity. These highly allocated, investment-grade bottles represent the absolute epitome of classic Piedmontese winemaking, built to evolve elegantly for half a century.
