Chateau Pontet Canet: Superstar Pauillac

The 5th Growth Pauillac estate of Chateau Pontet Canet has risen through the ranks to become one of Bordeaux’s most famous and influential wine estates in recent years.

Under the guidance of the visionary Alfred Tesseron, who revolutionised the property, it saw an immense rise in quality in the early 2000s, culminating in back-to-back 100 points scores from Robert Parker for the 2009 and 2010 vintages. It retains a loyal following of fans who love the story, quality and opulent, luxurious style of the wines made here.

Tesseron’s influence on Pontet Canet, Bordeaux and further afield cannot be overstated. The estate was one of the first to embrace not just organic, but biodynamic principles and the success seen here no doubt led many others to follow suit.

Around 95% of the crop goes into the famous Grand Vin. The balance goes into the increasingly rare second wine, Les Haut de Pontet.

Rich, luxurious, opulent and muscular in style

There was always huge potential and excellent raw materials at Pontet Canet. This 81-hectare estate sits on an excellent terroir that borders both Mouton Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild. The primary soil type is gravel over limestone, and perfect for growing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon.

Techniques in the winery were revolutionary at the time and remain cutting-edge. Concrete vats made from gravel and sand taken from the estate. Famously, concrete amphoras are used for fermentation alongside traditional wooden casks.

In style, Chateau Pontet Canet’s luxurious wines are muscular, rich and succulent. There are gobs of black cassis fruit and masses of concentration. Hedonistic and unique, Pontet Canet is a true fine wine superstar.
