Based in the northernmost village of the Barolo zone, Comm. G.B. Burlotto is a historic estate that has transitioned from a revered insider secret into one of the most fiercely sought-after names in fine wine. Founded in the late 19th century by Giovan Battista Burlotto—a visionary producer who was among the first in Piedmont to sell Barolo in bottles rather than casks—the winery helped establish the global reputation of the region.

Today, the family legacy is brilliantly maintained by his great-grandson, Fabio Alessandria. Fabio has steered the estate to international cult status by combining a thoughtful preservation of traditional cellar techniques with a meticulous, organic-leaning approach to farming across their 12 hectares of pristine vineyards.

The Acclaimed Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero

The spiritual heart and crown jewel of the estate is its holding in Monvigliero, widely regarded as the grand cru of Verduno. The Burlotto interpretation of this vineyard is celebrated as a stylistic masterpiece and a triumph of traditional vinification. Fabio Alessandria continues the historic practice of foot-crushing 100% whole-cluster Nebbiolo grapes, followed by an extended maceration that can last up to two months in open wooden vats.

This labour-intensive method, combined with ageing in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, yields a Barolo of unparalleled aromatic complexity. Rather than emphasising heavy dark fruit, Burlotto Monvigliero is defined by its ethereal, high-toned perfume of white pepper, wild strawberries, cedar, and tapenade, backed by an incredibly fine, silky tannic structure.

Stylistic Finesse, Quality, and Ageing Potential

Beyond its legendary flagship bottling, the overarching style of Comm. G.B. Burlotto is characterised by transparency, weightless concentration, and grace. It’s a bit of a cliche, but this is Barolo at its most Burgundian. The portfolio highlights the unique microclimate of Verduno, where a high percentage of limestone and maritime soils naturally imparts a mineral drive and bright acidity to the wines.

In addition to their exceptional single-vineyard Barolos, which include Cannubi and Castelletto, the estate produces a benchmark village-level Barolo and a highly coveted, pepper-scented Pelaverga. Through strict sorting and low yields, the estate achieves remarkable consistency across different vintages. Built on balance rather than raw power, these highly allocated masterpieces require patient cellaring to fully unfurl their intricate, multi-layered savoury depths.
