Domaine de la Romanee-Conti: A Fine Wine Icon
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is one of the most prestigious fine wine producers, not just of Burgundy, but in the world. With a magnificent array of holdings in some of Burgundy’s best vineyards and a portfolio of wines that are near unmatched in their quality and cachet, it’s easy to see why allocations of Romanee-Conti are such a prize.
The domaine is owned by two of Burgundy’s great families, the de Villaines and the Leroy’s. Today it is run by Aubert de Villaine, his nephew Bernard and Perrine Fenal, the daughter of Lalou Bize-Leroy.
In the winery, whole clusters are used with no de-stemming to give complexity and longevity. Yields are tiny and quality utterly magnificent across the board. These are some of the more refined, sophisticated and chic wines that money can buy. Indeed, it’s hard to think of another producer that would generate the same level of excitement as Romanee-Conti if a bottle is placed on a dinner table.
The Magnificent Romanee-Conti Grand Crus
The Domaine has around 25 hectares of vines, all of which are Grand Cru. The majority are located in the prestigious village of Vosne-Romanée and are some of the most renowned of any in the region.
The two Vosne Romanee monopoles are perhaps the most coveted wines in the portfolio. The flagship is the rare, complex and cerebral La Romanee-Conti, with the richer and more intense La Tache often a rival in quality. Making up the reds are the Richebourg, Romanee St-Vivant, Grands Echezeaux and Echezeaux.
Away from Vosne Romanee, there is also a Corton Grand Cru, a recent addition to the lineup.
While more famous for reds, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti crafts some sublime white Burgundy. The Montrachet is one of the planet’s most sought-after whites and has been recently supplemented by an excellent Corton Charlemagne. Romanee-Conti also makes a tiny amount of Batard Montrachet. This is not released commercially and is served only to lucky guests of the domaine.
